I can't make up my mind between a Boss 302 or 2015 Mustang GT

Kinja'd!!!

And it is driving me absolutely insane.

So after some discussion with my dad last weekend I started realizing I am in a pretty good position to be looking into new cars. Long story short, I came up with my two favorites. After some debating we decided it would be best to test drive the two cars side by side to figure out what I wanted. And it just made things worse.

First up was the competition orange 2012 Boss. This one was a little rough for me but my main goal was to figure out which car I liked better, so that didn’t matter to much to me. I am very familiar with S197's so I knew what to expect. The Recaro’s I swear are molded to fit me, they are very comfortable and just feel right. The whole interior is obviously not as good as the new S550's but compared to my Mach 1 it’s a luxury car.

The car rode surprisingly well, I expected it to be much stiffer but I had no issues with it. The power is just intoxicating and the exhaust was very close to my father’s old 2014 GT which I still think is the best sounding Coyote exhaust. To keep it short, I liked it a lot.

But then there’s the 2015+. This one was a performance pack, exactly what I am looking for. I was not ready for that car to be as fun as it was. It is a lot of what the Boss was with more comfort, tech, safety, etc. The car was ridiculously free revving to. I accidently (I swear!) hit redline.

Kinja'd!!!

And that’s where the problem is. The 2015 GT makes so much more sense, it’s newer, has a better interior, is just as much fun and will be better for longer trips to whatever school I go to next. But the Boss, like my Mach has that rarity, specialness and rawness I loved. It’s very much like a muscle car and I like having something a little different. My current campus is littered with S550's and most of their driver’s are a little.... Reckless to say the least. I don’t want to look like them, granted I’m driving a Mustang regardless.

It’s killing me to sell my Mach 1 after all the time and money I put into it but as I keep repeating it makes sense to sell it now, drive my brother’s car for a bit until I can find my perfect car. I think that’s it though, I feel as though because I’m selling the Mach I have to have a proper successor to it, hence the Boss. But the GT was that and a bag of chips.

It’s all a bit confusing and I’m curious to see what you guys say.

Kinja'd!!!

If there’s one thing I do know however is that I will miss this car and probably regret selling it. I am beyond lucky finding this as my first car. Unfortunately I need the money I make off of this car to fund the new one.

Edit: I should probably also mention this will be my DD, I don’t care about a Boss losing value as a GT will anyway. I’m getting one of these cars because they’re lots of fun to drive, not to sit. I am planning on selling the Mach soon while I can still get the most out of it. Among other reasons it’s just time for this to happen soon.

Don’t get the Boss unless you (at least) are shopping a 2nd car that you won’t put much many miles on and you want a collectible. The new GT is faster and better in almost every way as a DD.

The S550 is better in every measure. Get it and enjoy driving it rather than worrying about hurting the value of the Boss by putting miles on it

Was going to post the same thing. 2013/14 Boss 302 in Gotta Have It Green is the right choice to go with.

That said, if the 2015+ you’re considering is a Premium + Performance Pack (with Recaros?), that maybe the all around better car. If it’s a base, I’d go with the Boss.

Sorry to hear that you’re planning on selling the Mustang. I think it’s super rad.

Personally, I’m on the same page as you. While the 2015 is a better car on paper, I think the 302 is cooler, and that has to count for something, right?

Funny enough I have a poster of that car over my head right now. Love it in that one off grabber blue. 2012 Laguna Seca’s are so close to what I want to spend. It’s very tempting.

This will be my DD. I have no problem driving a collectible and putting miles on it. I mean my mom drives her GT350 just to get groceries. It’s made to be driven. Of course the 15 will be better and faster, but to me it’s the experience of driving the car. Not necessarily how fast it is. Any new car is going to be a better DD than my Mach so the bar will be set pretty low.

Is this for DD use? How many miles do you plan on putting on it? The 302 would be the more special car to buy - and likely the smarter choice from a $ perspective as well, being something that would hold its value better as a sought-after vehicle. The ’15 GT will just depreciate like any other car for the most part and you could probably get the same car for a lot less money a few years down the road.

If you feel the 302 offers the comforts you need for regular use and don’t think you’d beat on such a special car too hard, then go for it! Even if you DO need a car to put a lot of miles on I’d say get the 302 and some other cheap beater for daily duty. Might help with insurance having the 302 as a “leisure” vehicle that you don’t put many miles on too.

I know that the Boss might pull at the heart strings more, but I’m also certain the GT would be the much more “livable” car. And, if you’re going to be driving it anyway, you might as well have something you won’t always have to worry about diminishing its value as a collectors piece.

As for all the other people at school that have S550's, you really can’t be concerned with that. People will realize you aren’t a tool. Don’t let idiot drivers dictate what you want to drive.

Oh I’m not worried about putting miles on the Boss. A new GT and Boss will both lose value. I’ve already found used 2015's loaded for under 30. I care about enjoying the car, not how many miles I put on it. That is no concern to me.

But it’s true, the S550 is so much better. But to own a Boss would be so cool.

Why do you need a new car? If you love the Mach 1, will regret selling it, and would only be replacing it with something that performs the same function (ie not a pickup, or some such), why get rid of it?

I assume you already own the Mach 1 free & clear and would be getting a loan for the new car. Why do that to yourself? Keep the car you already love, spend a few months worth of “car payments” getting any minor issues it might have straightened out and just enjoy it. Save money and still have a great car, win all around.

Heck, budget for a car payment every month and instead put that money into savings. That way if in a few years to do need a different car for work/family/whatever you have the money for a down payment and don’t have to sell the fun car to buy the responsible one.

Ya, it’s been amazing but with the warranty running out, if something major happens I’m out a lot of money that I would plan on using for another car in the future. Not that I expect that to happen, but it sits in the back of my mind nagging at me. This car has been well taken care of its entire life. But it’s definitely getting older and I’m getting spoiled being around so many newer cars. Now is the time where if I sell it I can get the most out of it.

Go for the Boss. A Mustang, while a great car, is a dime a dozen. A Boss 302 raced in the Trans Am series and the modern Continental series. It has the name, it has the pedigree, it has the special X factor a GT will always lack.

So what if it is a little less comfortable? It has a radio, AC, a stick shift, and automatic windows. That’s a hell of a lot more amenities than some people have in a DD.

It will be a DD just like my Mach. My commutes aren’t far now (14K miles in 3 years) but likely will be much more in the future. I definitely wouldn’t beat on any car I get, I’m pretty tame with my Mach now. I can’t afford another car if I get the Boss though. I don’t care about the miles though. I’m not holding onto it to make some cash down the road. I’m getting it to drive. If it holds value, that’s great. But I won’t be upset if it doesn’t.

Driven every car you mentioned and owned a 2003 Cobra for a while. Got a chance to drive a 1LE recently and it is remarkable how much better the Camaro1LE SS feels in terms of handling, grip, and braking. It’s of course quicker accelerating as well.

Haven’t had a chance to drive a GT350, but it’s probably the only mustang that could substitute a 1LE in terms of performance.

I know this doesn’t answer your question, and it likely doesn’t help you, but I wanted to throw that into the mix.

I do like the S550 with the performance pack more than the Boss 302 though.

Now, with the caveat that it’s a free country(superscript TM ‘murica), I’d recommend the 15 GT. A quick search says 4000 Boss ‘stangs were made in 2012. Sure, they’re mean to be driven, but to me, there’s a difference between ‘driven’ and ‘put miles on’. I’ve never had anything collectible, and if I did, I wouldn’t have any qualms about driving it, but I would hesitate to run get a gallon of milk in one of 4000 of such a nice vehicle. A run of the mill ‘15 GT? Sure, enjoy the heck out of it, if some jackwagon texting plows into it and totals it, go get another. I’d drive a collectible, but I don’t know that I’d put “mindless miles” on it. Your call, but that’d be mine.

Not on purpose, but I took it out everywhere. And ya, I shouldn’t be concerned but it bothers me for some reason. I will regret selling it. But it’s kind of time to. I wasn’t planning on doing it until summer of next year, have one more year of no car loan. But things are starting to align and doing this now will let me sell the car, drive my parent’s/brother’s car (He’s unlicensed so I can use it until he gets it) and when I find the right car I can spring on it. If I did this later I would be trading the car in and feel insulted at the amount I would likely get. Not after everything I’ve done.

There really isn’t anything to sort out on the car either. I don’t need to spend potential car payments on anything. I’m afraid I’ll have to though, even if the car is in great shape right now. I’ve been preparing for this for a little while. I’ve just been saving.

Prices are still a bit high for a 300hp muscle car from 14 years ago, and I’m sure the Boss will follow a similar pricing. Besides, there’s something special about driving a special edition.

Its doable but I work off of 8 mile just outside of Detroit and checking on the car every couple of hours got old. Go for it. Right now is great time to go hunt one down. In 10 years they’ll be tore up or overpriced and s550s will be easy to find.

Btw nice Mach.

Boss for sure. It’s already taken the major chunk of depreciation. While I’m sure you can get a used 2015 GT for a good price I think the window of opportunity to find a nice affordable Boss is closing. Years down the road you’ll be able to get into an S550 for cheap if you want one. Plus I just love the Boss.

I love azure blue. Despite it being sold in higher numbers they’re harder to find and often command more. Interestingly enough, I think I am going to ask 10K or a little more for this car. I got this car at 10,500. I didn’t think I would ask that much but every single car listed near me has a lot of usually poorly done mods. Not to mention those cars look beaten. Seeing those going for a lot of money gives me hope I can get away with my price.

Awhile back at my old job someone claiming to own my car (Or one very close to it, he didn’t specify) wrote a note and put it on my car. He mentioned if I wanted to sell it to contact him. I’m going to have to do that soon. Another thing I worry about is someone getting this car and undoing all the good I have done. Over the past three years I must have thrown everything I earned in this car to keep it in the great shape I got it in. If the original owner (1 owner car) took it back I probably would feel better about selling it.

It sounds crazy because once I sell the car, that’s it. I guess I care to much about it though.

You seem to be on the younger side of things (25ish?). Get the Boss.

That’s a good point. It’s only going to get harder to find a nice Boss. In fact it is right now. I thought I found my perfect car, a ‘13 gotta have it green. In good shape. Then I noticed the taillights were replaced with the 10-12 lights. Why someone would do that is beyond me. And replacing those would cost up to 800 dollars. That’s insane.

Doesn’t matter which is better, get which will make you happier. It sounds like the Boss is a better fit for you

Thanks!

Ya, I’m kind of thinking the same. It might be a good time to buy. I think at this point I might look for a Boss, but if I can’t find one I like and my perfect 15+ comes around for the right price I might not hesitate.

Also that white car is a great deal. All of the documentation, tasteful mods, low miles and well taken care of. I would buy it in a heartbeat. That’s arguably the best deal I’ve seen in a long time.

Take it from me as well as Vondon302....BOSS 302 is the only answer.

Absolutely no contest. The Boss 302 is the pinnacle of naturally aspirated, live axle performance and the last of the breed. If you like them both, go Boss. Performance, Character, Exclusivity and Soul. No questions in my book.

I’ve been in this same boat a few times, except it’s mostly been with selling my Cobra to get a Boss, or for a little bit cheaper I could get a normal S197 GT. All I see all day are S550’s, while I rarely if ever see a Boss. Resale value will definitely be better on the Boss than the S550 as well. I’m kind of a model/rarity whore, I would definitely go for the Boss.
