“Dad, there aren’t any holes in this. Why do I feel so dizzy?”

Gosh, son, just loosen the neck a little. If you’ve been in the “module” too long just push on the back seat to get more air.

This kid’s devil may care approach to shuttle protocol is why it would take another 40 years for interior trunk releases to become standard.

To keep him from breathing CO, probably...

You want to know what’s really messed up about this? That trunk doesn’t even have a button to release. Key. Only. Of course, the rear seat isn’t really secured in place and there’s a pass-through, but even so - kid would have to squeeze past the spare.

Still a lot safer than any Gemini or Apollo mission.

Trufax - my Galaxie has an exhaust leak and a hole in the trunk. I MEAN A BREECH IN THE MODULE

Yeah, back in those days, neither exhausts nor trunk floors lasted as long as they do now. When I was little, my mom drove a white ‘63 Nova Sedan (seatbelts are for losers) - we sold it to a neighbor’s uncle who died in it several years later from CO poisoning.

Hey, Jimmy! Climb on out of the trunk and help me cover this fence with fine, American lead based paint! If you help there’s a pack of Lucky Strikes in it for you. Doctors say they will help people of all ages relax after a long, tough day.

I was thinking Jimmy could use cousin Mike’s leftover half can of chew. No point in wasting Luckys on someone who can’t appreciate them.

Rear seatback is just wedged in, right? But IIRC, some of these cars had metal structure behind that which would prevent pass-through.

Interestingly, the exhaust failure is partly due to the pipe getting banged into things and the trunk floor is due to leaving the seal off the trunk edge. The small hole in the passenger floor is legit, though.

If you drive fast enough the exhaust fumes won’t be able to catch up and poison you.

The Galaxie doesn’t, really. Neither does my Lincoln, to speak of. This means that in a pinch I have what amounts to a 6' bed truck and an 8' bed truck.

Might be more of a convertible thing. I’ve owned a handful of mid-60's GM cars, and the one that I recall having an issue with that was a ‘65 Skylark convertible. Thought the ‘65 Cutlass was the same but it’s been a long time for both. No clue on the Olds 88 I had—

There’s a web on the Lincoln, but it has huge holes and was pretty much there to support the breezeway window setup on the Continental models and enhance the unibody. The Galaxie has basically nothing.

Here, Jimmy! I got you a new toy to play with. Just like your favorite TV star Roy Rogers!

It’s a toy pistol and it’s very lifelike- that’s because it’s an actual Colt Peacemaker! It just has the firing pin filed off of the hammer.

It’s funny you say that, because SAAs do have accidental discharge problems. Popular to carry with fie rounds, closed on empty. However, the pin is separate, and if you give Jimmy one with the pin removed...

Back then children riding in the truck was perfectly acceptable ... seriously, it was. My dad is the middle of 11 children. Their family vehicle was a sedan, so that meant a few of the boys had to ride in the truck ... including those times they drove 550 miles to see the grand parents. They did at least leave the trunk open.

In fairness, that trunk is yuge. Luxurious. Classy, even. No, actually the classy trunk winner is the ‘59 Lincoln when I get done. Deeper than the Galaxie, lined in fancy suitcase lining stuff, sound-deadened, and has a fancy cover on the spare. Like this:

Most of my ridiculous suitcase-lining is in not-so-great shape, but there are redo kits available. Most of the jack instructions sheet is intact, though.
