I saw this on a freeway sign on I5 the other day. I’ve since come to understand it is not some local CalTrans person daydrinking  doing this but is state-wide.

That seems quite assumptive tbqh, especially with Comic-Con coming up in a few months

They’ve been doing cutesy messages for about 6 months where I am. Some aren’t bad.

Pedestrians also shouldn’t be on the highway.

The main reason this sign is so weird.

I think it’s nationwide, actually. I see messages like this all the time in Iowa.

But some comicon goers do have armor...of varying degrees of effectiveness from “not bad” to “likely to increase injuries to the wearer”.

Because the pedestrians don’t have armor

It’s basically the PD saying pedestrians shouldn’t be here, but they are so be careful.

Similar to these new roads they are building by me with “pedestrian islands” that are designed to help save jaywalkers lives. Yes, they are literally building features that are encouraging illegal road crossing...

I have the idea that these signs are bought first and a use found later. Found around where I live:

“Share the road—Drive carefully around bicycles”

“Don’t drive around the gates at level crossings”

“Speed limits enforced by radar”

I’d love to get hold of the controls for a day.

“Save the whales”

“Don’t look now but there’s a cop behind you”

“Bush did 9/11"

“No farting with your windows up—$1500 maximum fine”

I don’t give a shit. Sorry to come off cold, but I don’t. The only person to blame is the moron who walks down the 401.

They’ve been doing this in Utah for years now. Sometimes they even contain terrible puns or sci-fi references.

Oh I totally agree, let natural selection do its thing. Just showing every sign has a story behind it, and it certainly won’t stop ambulance chasers.

There’s one they like to put up about going around the gates on level crossings. Message, good. Placement, wut.

I think they buy the signs first and figure out what to do with them second.

And definitely not the electronic ones.

Don’t think “Armor” would help Pedestrians in that environment.

If anything, it’d just keep all the remains in a handy take-home container for the EMS Responders.

someone just got splatter on one of the main routes into Boston just before morning rush hour. It completely F’d up traffic for the morning. I heard up to 3.5 hrs to get into the city. they have no idea what the person was doing crossing the main highway.

Welp, BRB sending the MTO a $2000 cheque... Or are geese fair game? I feel like geese should be fair game. A driving related life ambition is to find one of those people who stop for a family of geese crossing the road, blow by them and take out the whole flock.

...did I just say that out loud?

I think it’s that there are a small number of circumstances where they have a message they need to display, but then they figure it is a waste to leave them blank the vast majority of the time so they put up safety messages otherwise (I wouldn’t be shocked if distracting drivers caused a negative net safety impact, but who knows).

Probably, but what? “Road x moving well y moving slowly” just diverts traffic from one to another and it’s largely inaccurate inside 5 minutes. Safety messages are filler, like you said.

The only thing I can think of that’s vaguely useful is “Travel time to X”, but if that’s it... gimme my tax dollars back. find your $650k PER SIGN somewhere else.

How about pedestrians stay out of the area for cars. If they can’t agree to that they must share their bed with a 70s Caddy.

Kinja'd!!! "facw" (facw)

Diverting traffic can be useful, especially if there is an accident. Of course a GPS with traffic makes them largely obsolete.
