Kinja'd!!!

Thats definitely what 6000 mile synthetic diff oil should look like.

Kinja'd!!!

Comes with a bearded friend.

Im actually not that worried. The gear oil, it turns out, is a blend of moly knuckle grease and gear oil. as for the shavings, I mean I still think there is more lash in the front diff than I think there should be, but these gears are only 10,000 miles old so I expect there to be shavings. No chunks.

Kinja'd!!!

Well not gear chunks but you can actually see the moly chunks. The question is: why is my knuckle grease so friendly with my diff? They are new(ish) axle seals and the breather line should be clear to breath. its a mystery.

Also a mystery is the huge mess in the front of the engine.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

a LOT of crud buildup that is a little moist. where is it coming from? The front main seal is new, the oil pump gasket is new...where you coming from oily substance? Going to hit it with some degreaser and see what shows up.

Moly makes a mess out of everything, but it’s too good as a lubricant to not use.

its great for my birfields...just not sure what its doing hanging with my gears.

This past weekend, I covered the fuse box and dizzy with a plastic bag, soaked the bay with simple green, and hit up a coin-op car wash to rinse out the engine bay. Way easier to track down leaky 20-year old gaskets now.

Knuckle grease getting friendly with your differential oil can only mean bad axle seals, unless someone put grease in your differential. Is there anything weeping from your knuckle seals? Do they look wet/oily? Molybdenum isn’t magnetic, so that’s got to be steel shavings on your drain plug. I wouldn’t be too worried about the shavings on new gears as long as there are no chunks or slivers like you mentioned.

If your front main/crank seal is good and you know that the oil pump gasket is also good, check the oil pump outlet gasket p/n: 90430-27005. My second thought would be valve cover or an oil pan gasket.

Moly likes to party.

I stand corrected, molybdenum is a paramagnetic material which may be attracted to certain magnetic fields but will not be repelled by an opposite magnetic field.

oil pan gasket should be good, though it could be the valve cover...it seems like its much lower than that though.

No gear oil in the trunions, just grease.

If that’s the same fluid you broke in on then that is probably par for the course. Some gearset manufacturers tell you to change the fluid after the first 500 miles.

I changed after 600, then changed again. This is the 3rd change (what I put back in) in 10,000

Gotcha. Must have missed that.

What kind of diff?

its the front diff on my cruiser. You didn’t miss it, I forget to mention it here.

Oh, I meant actual diff, as in carrier.

Its just a standard Toyota 8 inch high pinion e-locker carrier with Nitro 4.56 ring and pinion.

I was a touch concerned when I changed my rear diff oil and the plug was bearded. Although I had a couple of pieces that looked like flakes or something more sizable than filings. No noise or anything though, so I’m not going to worry about it until the next time I change it. The change I did was likely the first time it had ever been done, so 12 years and 130k miles.

Yeah, it’s probably just shavings from the gearset then. I think you’re right, no big deal unless the rear is making noise. And that doesn’t even look like a lot of fuzz to me.

yeah, im not too worried about the shavings, its just the moly. It means bad axles seals...which is a PITA

Maybe there’s a chance that Nitro’s gear sets contain an alloy of steel with some molybdenum content?

nah, its definitely more than a little moly.

mud doesn’t seem bothered by the amount and my knuckles are still grease so Im not too worried. I don’t like the huge mess at the front of the engine though, I need to degrease and discover on that one.
