Good to see Honda coming out with a wild car after receiving so much criticism on Jalopnik about their boring cars. I’m sure the reaction will be positive!

One thing I have learned from this Geneva show is that people really like boring looking cars and anything even remotely close to interesting is automatically ugly.

I was interested until they said it has 20" wheels. That means this is just for hard-parkers and posers. No one who actually drives wants 20" wheels, they are heavy, too big to fit in the car, and tires are too damned expensive to use.

I am disappoint.

I like it - and I’m wayyyy outside of the target market for this car (I’m 49). The design is a little over the top, and I’m with WRXforScience on the 20s, but I hope to hell they succeed with this. Anything that pulls Honda (and Toyota) out of the boring zone is good news, as far as I’m concerned.

I’d rather have a Mugen RR for the price.

Can I have this but make it look like a normal SI. Too much for me. Also 300 is a lot for the front to deal.

You know, I don’t necessarily hate the Type R. It kind of reminds me of a second gen WRX with the body modifications. It wouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

I do agree though that 20's are fucking stupid. Unless this thing has 19" brakes or something, that is just completely pointless. And even then, if it does have brakes that big, why? Put some 17's on it and call it a day.

If an F1 car can stop with 13" wheels, a Civic can stop with 16s.

What Cash Rewards said. It’s for big brakes.

A Formula 1 car also weighs next to nothing.

722 kg? The Type R won’t be shedding 140 mph every few seconds.

I’d buy that excuse for some 18" wheels, but not 20" dubs. If that thing needs that much brake, it must weigh too much.

Yeah, that’s a little disingenuous. F1 car weighs less, with expensive carbon brakes that won’t last thousands of miles, has downforce that increases braking, etc. Any car with 13" inch brakes stops better with 14". There is a trade-off with rotational mass and unsprung weight, but if this is a serious track car then it could be helpful. Necessary, of course not. But to dismiss a car outright because of wheel size is silly.

Yes, a Formula 1 car has a certain braking system, therefore a Japanese compact is invalid.

There’s also an even bigger tradeoff with slip angle and sidewall. Can’t use your bigger brakes if the tires can’t hold the grip. There’s a reason you don’t see race cars with low profiles. I’m dismissing it for something that’s a performance tradeoff simply for cosmetics. If it were purely aesthetic, I wouldn’t care. You know what I see in the side shot? About two inches between the calipers and the rim. This has nothing to do with brake size.

It’s a possibility. That caliper looks snug. Also a lot of the car is for aesthetics anyway. A lot of the people who were fans of the original Fast and Furious films will like it. It may not be Jalopnik’s cup of tea, but it is actually part of car culture. (I myself was one of them, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I quite like that sort of stuff).

Three things. 1)I agree with most everything you’re saying. 2) if I bought this car I’d be autocrossing and track daying it, and it would get either a bigger brake kit or smaller wheel /larger sidewall combo, based on what you’re showing in that pic. Hell, maybe both. 3) wheel size as a judgement of whether this car will perform or not is not a valid metric when nobody’s driven it yet.

I like it and am even considering buying one *gasp* ...new! Without the wing and with some 18" wheels, I’d be camped out in front of a Honda dealer right now.

After proper comparisons with the GTI, Golf R, STI, WRX, Focus RS, Focus ST, Fiesta ST, 330i, and yes, even the Mazda3.

I’m reserving judgement until it’s been thoroughly tested. The hot hatch segment is stronger than its ever been, full of seriously mind blowing cars. If the Civic’s performance doesn’t live up to the promises its wild styling is making then the competition is going to have it for breakfast.

I’m really hoping it won’t prove to be all show no go.

It was the final straw, that step too far, the last piece of evidence that this car is not meant for me or enthusiasts like me (drivers, if cars and coffee/car meets are your thing, whatever this is a great cars and coffee flavor of the month car).

Let’s not pretend that the civic is for guys who are looking to go to the track or hit up an autocross, which is a little sad since the originals were for us.

If it’s the final straw, that’s certainly fair enough. There are definitely plenty to go around on the car. But will it drive well? We don’t know yet. I hope so, if only to keep pushing the subies and VW.
