“He’s obviously way more awesome than you, and he probably wouldn’t rat out his friend, here’s your ticket.”

Shockingly, I’ve actually been cut more slack while speeding on motorcycles than in my car.

Whether true or not, I’ve heard that as long as you’re not a dick the cops generally turn a blind eye to 5-10mph over because you can argue “It’s unsafe to look down at your speed on a bike”. Which is pretty true IMO, I generally don’t look at my speedo too often so if there’s no other traffic, I just go at a comfortable clip. Granted, I don’t drag knee and rev it over 10k rpm at every chance I get so that probably helps.

The magic number for speeding is 7. Yes. 7. My uncle, who was a detective in the LAPD proved this to my dad by passing a marked police car on a 2 lane road at exactly 7MPH over the speed limit. The officer just flashed his lights as a warning and nothing else.

What I was thinking too. That and he knew he had no way to stop that guy.

So you’re not allowed to ride a dirt bike on the highway ?

In most states, nope. However in that state, over the highway is perfectly okay. California apparently has mixed feelings.

Certain areas are much more lenient than others, even in the same state. For example, around Sand Mountain in Nevada, OHVs on the pavement is a major no no. But around Smith Valley just a few hours away it’s not a big deal as long as you are reasonable about it on your way to and from the trails. Just don’t go being an ass.

This is true even in a car pretty much anywhere in the West. If you’re not being a dick, and you’re not a kid, it is very unlikely to get pulled over for less than 10 or 15 over.

Imagine my surprise when I was in England last year and came across a bike lane on a highway (not an M road, but still a grade separated highway):

That was what I wondered. If you can’t ride on the road, then the only way to get to your trail could be to put it in your truck unless there is a common sense exception.

It comes down to a mix of culture and environment. In the case of Sand Mountain, there’s a park you should stay in and a network of trails to get to all the places around it. You can’t even drive on the paved part of the park’s driveway. Smith Valley however, is a small farming community surrounded by old mines, dirt roads, and defacto trails. The off road population there is also much much smaller and much less “bro party” atmosphere. Therefore, leniency is much more common.

No magic number, how you react, and other factors like surrounding traffic and local area are far more important. I’ve passes a cop at over 90 on a 2 lane highway with 55mph speed limit. The cop turned on his lights and motioned at me to slow down. I waved back and continued on at the same speed never having hit my breaks. A motorcycle following me slammed on the brakes and nearly lost it. The cop spun around and pulled him over.
