Kinja'd!!!

They can be had for cheap, they weigh under 2500lbs, & apparently handle decently.

They can totally take a beating, and they’re fun to toss around. The auto parts store I worked for had like 5 of them, one died of a snapped timing belt, another died because it was crashed like three times, and a third died from I’m not sure what, but we couldn’t get it to stay running. I think the eventual result was a blown motor from a lack of oil, since the idiot that drove it never checked the oil. It needed a few top-ups between oil changes.

The aux jacks break really, really easily, the interiors are very plasticky and rattle, and the seats aren’t great. But I can’t emphasize enough how much they can take a beating, it’s really quite impressive.

Thats why you rip out the interior & put in racing buckets.

They do handle pretty decently for a little economy car! :)

I’ve also had very few issues with mine since I bought it used in 2013. The rustproofing isn’t bad either....114,000km on mine now and no signs of bubbling anywhere (though I do get it undercoated every year)! Sure, there are a few little rattles here and there (mostly from where I had a small accident with mine in Jan. 2015 and the body shop had to remove the rear-right passenger interior trim to do the repairs - it’s never been 100% quiet again since), but nothing you I can’t live with or that can’t easily be washed out by turning the radio on to a normal volume. Hey, it is a basic Korean economy car from the time when Hyundai/Kia were starting to get the whole build quality thing down, after all, so I cut it some slack. :)

The sportier ones like the one in your pic with the 16" rims and fog lights look surprisingly good as well IMHO!

Mine was a base trim with NO options at all (no A/C, 5-spd, no ABS, no Cruise, no ESC, no keyless entry, power locks, no power mirrors, no power windows...). Get one of those stripper models like mine and the price is incredibly reasonable. I got mine for around $6900 CAD all-in (taxes, fees, everything) at the local Mazda dealership used with only 54,000kms on it at the time.

All and all....I agree with you and mine has been a worthy companion for the last 60,000km! :D

I will say not a lot of aftermarket support for them though...

No AC? Damn, I didn’t realize they sold cars in the US or Canada without AC.

In Mexico you could get the sedan as a Dodge Attitude. They didn’t even redo the Hyundai oval, they just put the ram head logo into it. Later ones even kept the H logo but changed the words on the trunk. Now the Dodge Attitude is a rebadged Mirage. I don’t understand the automotive market anymore.

I wouldn’t mind a base Accent as a second car, but I can’t imagine going without air conditioning year-round. Some were equipped with AC, of course, but the poverty-spec base models seem overrepresented in Seattle’s used-car market.

You can still get some cars without A/C AFAIK....I think the Micra is available here without it in base trim if memory serves!

That kind of surprises me, especially with the prevelanece of decent used cars, it’s not like you have to buy new to get a reliable car. Then again, it might just be on of those things where they’ve got one on the lot to get you in at that price but no on actually buys it.

They can be ordered without it, but not sure you find on them on lots much at all other than one or two (except in Quebec, apparently Quebecois buyers love “stripper” model cars with few features).
