I Hope Dealers Aren't Taking Advantage of Truck Buyers

Kinja'd!!!

Dealers are finding out that tossing on wheels, tires, and a lift themselves allows them to sell these trucks at a mark up. Even if it ends up being “around” MSRP I’m concerned that buyers may miss out on incentives AND end up financing mods as well as an upcharge on their warranty coverage. But I’m majorly paranoid in general, Sgt.

Think about it like this, if you have some 2017 model year trucks on the lot and the 2018s have already started coming in then is there any reason NOT to modify the trucks with the deepest incentives and sell the rigs at around their original MSRPs?

I’m just thinking about keeping all the profitability on the trucks on top of customization profit, increased floor appeal and all of the back end sales opportunities. Am I concerned over nothing?

I hope they are taking advantage of them, I have no sympathy for people who spend that much on dealer-modified bro trucks

In your example, they modify the old stock... my local Ford dealer brodozer-izes the first group of medium to high trim level trucks they receive. All of them.

I went in to look when the 2015s came out - they literally didn’t have anything above an XL that wasn’t modified. But they had 12 brand new 2015 F-150 XLTs and Limiteds with aftermarket grills, lifts, hoods and wheels. Asking over sticker for all of them.

I noticed the same thing with the new SuperDuties.

(I bought from a dealer 40 miles out in farm country. They had exactly the spec I wanted, would do almost everything over email and didn’t have a single modified new truck on their lot.)

There is a dealership around here that does the same thing. They take a normal truck, throw some wheels, tint and a leveling kit on it and sell it for alot more. The dealership is trying to make as much as possible and dipshit customers are buying them. If I was a dealer I would probably do the same thing.

I have no sympathy for bro-trucks in general, especially when they’re jacked up ridiculously high without any lift from the tires themselves. Not only do they obstruct everyone’s sight lines but they look so ridiculous on “tiny” tires.

The dealership we bought the Ram from on Friday certainly does. Amidst the acres of unmodded trucks was a smattering of “RMT” (whatever that means) branded Sierra SLEs with lifts, wheels and Nittos. Asking price, somewhere in the $60k range

At least now I know where they came from, what they paid and have no problem pointing and laughing

Most of those people would use a credit card to buy thousands of dollars in lifts and wheels/tires so rolling them into the loan is a great idea in their mind.

To the contrary, these could have been sitting there for a while after the dealer installed all of their crap on them.

The major appeal of a modified vehicle is that the person that is modifying it gets to make it their own. This is why you never get back the $$$ you spend on parts in resale.

They aren’t taking advantage. They know exactly who they are selling to and the customers are buying into it. That said bro trucks are a guilty pleasure of mine. And even then I can’t stand the people who fawn over the Sema trucks but a mild lift, well placed lightbar and mud tires make me all giggly inside. There was a Ford dealer by me that had a 2014 Ram on the lot with that was burgundy with black wheels and mud tires that I absolutely loved every time I drove by. U fortunately I’m not in the position to buy something new

Isn’t it essentially what the truck manufacturers are doing? Take a utility vehicle that would normally sell for $20K, throw some leather, chrome, metallic paint and a fancy stereo and sell it for $50K? When there’s enough markup to give away a “free” economy car with purchase, you know the profit borders on insane.

You can option an F150 up to $70k. Sorry but your hopes were set to be dashed the moment you had them.

if you wanna be real paranoid, check out the current level of auto loan debt in the US and for added fun and paranoia look at how awesome and securitized it all is.

I can see why some wouldn’t like that idea. Myself included.

That’s why I’m glad one of my local Ford dealers doesn’t do that, and instead is an authorized Rocky Ridge dealer. With those packages, it’s more than just a ‘lift’, wheels, and tires.

Their packages are a lot more than that.

For example, the K2 package for the F-150 includes custom front and rear cross members, front strut tower extension, compression struts, a brake line relocation bracket, and Pro Comp ES9000 shocks.

More substance than a lot of dealer offered packages.

No different from the local Ford dealer with the “Candy Store” for their Mustangs. And yes, that’s what they actually call it.
