So if I buy a car, never register it, remove the engine in the street in front of my house will the city come and remove the shell at no cost to me? It’ll get tagged, impounded, and eventually junked but there will be no papers to link me to ownership. Would this work?

EDIT: Yes it would work but it’s kinda pointless. I’ll just call a scrapper.

I feel like there would likely be some kind of fines imposed on you for letting an engine-less shell of a car decay on your driveway long before it finally got towed away. So technically no cost to you if you don’t pay the fines. But that could create more headaches.

You don’t have people that will come, give you some Canukistan pesos and haul your shell off to be sold for scrap?

Yes, just write “failure to chooch” in shoe polish on the back window and they will take care of it.

In a lot of U.S. states, the seller is required to file paperwork with the state within a few days after the sale with the buyer’s name, address and driver’s license number for this exact reason. Ontario is (used to be?) a weird case though, no titling system (the registration is the title). But just call a junkyard, they’ll haul it for nothing.

It screws over the previous owner, because they’ll get the bill for your dirty deeds.

They could still look up who owned it last , and that person might tell them who it was sold to. Better file off all the VIN numbers too.

Yeah, but it’s like 100,000 trudeau pesos for someone to haul a car away. Or something like that

In addition to the scrapping option others have mentioned, what about a charity donation? I think they normally pick up cars in any condition (at least in the US, Canada’s tax structure might create different incentives).

This is the most Canadian thing ever...On one hand, there’s the expectation that the government will take care of all one’s problems, but on the other hand, inquiring about it before doing it so as to not be impolite.

I donated a car to the local Fire Department several years ago. IIRC, they were gonna give me a donation receipt for a tax deduction too (I declined, wasn’t paying taxes yet). They didn’t care that it needed a new gearbox to move under its own power again and picked it up from my house.

I saw it a few weeks later with the roof cut off for some jaws of life practice. I was a bit sad for it but it served a purpose.

Nope, and it would have been a US organization. A quick google shows some in Canada.

For example the Kidney Foundation of Canada says:

Remember, we take vehicles of any age or condition! Whether you call it a scrap car, old car, or a rust bucket, we will gladly tow it away for free and give you a valuable tax receipt. So, if you have an old, broken down car in your driveway or garage that you need to get rid of, call Kidney Car today!

The United Way is more restrictive, they’ll take non-runners, but say no major parts can be missing: http://www.myunitedway.ca/donate-a-car/

I’m sure there are plenty of other options as well.

It happened to me. I received the mailings for the stoplights he ran and the tolls he evaded. The address he gave me was bogus, so mailing the form to the DMV did no good. Still, I’m glad I’m not that guy.

Lesson: get solid ID from anyone you sell a car to.

so what happened to the project? i seem to remember having said something about taking on too many at once.

what happened ? money or time? INTEREST?

because you can ALWAYS source a sketchy drivetrain, throw a seat in it, and sell it as at least a runner. or throw it in the back yard for a later day project (i have more than a few). but there is no need to simply dispose of it because you wont get to it for a few.....

The popular junkyard in my city will tow your vehicle for free if they buy it from you.

Granted, I only got $60 for the shell of the Integra I just pulled apart, but I got aboslutely everything out of it that I needed.

I believe you’re referring to the Mustang project. The ‘73 Mustang is still sitting faithfully waiting for Alex to move to Toronto then we can start work on it. We need a donor engine so we’re buying a donor car. The debate was what to do with the shell. All is still going well with the projects!

Also: The Mustang in the photo is just a mustang, not ours. And we’re not trashing a car anyone cares about, trust me haha

oh HEY, thats a parts car?..........if its the one in the picture, cut that sucker up. save all the sheetmetal that you can for the project. line the walls of the garage with it. use a cutoff wheel to save, if nothing else the rear quarter skins. the roof........ look if you dont use the metal on the project mustang, the metal would make for good fabrication material.....

No motor, trans, computer, lights, bumpers, wiring harness, front seats, wheels, and several other parts missing, plus the shell was a rusted heap. I would have felt bad if they paid more for it.

I sold my first 300ZX to some scumbags who stripped it and left the shell on some guy’s land. The police came to my house since I was last registered owner. This may happen to your previous owner, it’ll be up to him whether he sells you out.

Hey if you thought the sale price was fair, that’s all there is.

I kinda always just presumed that if need be, I could always part out a car as much as I could and still end up with a couple hundred bucks from scrap. Guess having the engine still in it makes a big difference to the scrap value...

Kinja'd!!! "CobraJoe" (cobrajoe)
03/08/2017 at 20:45, STARS: 1

Yeah, scrap value is only dependant on weight of the car and the price of steel, unless there’s something worth saving on the car.

I did make a lot more money selling parts off of it though, enough to easily add up to 50% more than the car’s worth if I consider how much I’d have to pay for the parts I kept.
