I don't get how people can drive with headphones on.

Especially in Philadelphia (where, ironically, I see it all of the time despite being illegal, unlike NJ). I consider myself a pretty above average driver, since I pay attention, and an amazing driver, since this is the internet, but I’m still pretty sure I’d crash within seconds of driving with headphones on.

Despite the law, I have driven with earbuds in for long distances. There ’ s very little difference to me when compared with playing the radio at my “ normal ” volume. Hearing sirens? Doppler effect is far more meaningful to my failure to hear them. What I don ’ t get are the people who walk around in normal everyday settings with headphones on. You can ’ t have any interactions with them at all, not even “ excuse me. ” IMHO, it ’ s basically like a giant middle finger t - shirt. In my head, I like to just pretend they ’ re severely autistic and my rage will subside.

From a volume perspective they seem the same as speakers to me. But I’ve never worn a pair of earbuds that stayed in my ears. Even if I put them in just to do paperwork at my desk they will fall out. I don’t know how anyone could drive a car and not be constantly distracted with falling earbuds.

I’ve used some for some hands free phone talking.

I drove with earbuds on (sometimes just plain earplugs) when my employer decided that a blown muffler wasn’t a priority fleet repair. I did that for several months.

To be honest, it was kinda awesome driving around like that at first, but it got old real quick.

I saw a guy driving around with those noise cancelling over the ear Bose headphones. I also can’t understand why you’d want to lose one of your senses essential to driving.

+1. I don’t even like riding my bike with them in. I do it, because I gotta jam...but it has put me in a few sketchy spots. I’ll take one ear out if I’m on a main road.

Having lived in New York for years, I can tell you that that’s the point. There are times, like when you’re waiting for the bus or on the subway early in the morning and late at night, when the very last thing you ever want is human interaction. Earbuds and headphones are a gift from God.
