I had to run down to our local expo center and when I arrived, there was an SCCA meet happening in the front lot! Of course, I stopped, took some pictures, and talked to a few of the guys.

I was most interested in the WRXs, but everything was well represented - mustangs, toybarus, a couple of hondas, a couple of nissans, and more than a few miatas. In addition to the those in the pic above, there were three more in the line behind, all red.

The most interesting car of the day had people standing around it saying what on earth is that?

Truth be told, one of those guys is the owner.

It’s titled as a 1959 Volkswagon Beetle. By some quirk of our legal system, this thing is still street legal! He told me it’s the slowest thing out there, but it gets the most attention. He swaps the wheels and tires so he can run on the track, on the street, or in the sand. He was a bit concerned about how it was going to run since he lost control in the sand last weekend and drowned it in the river. He pulled the plugs to drain the water, changed the oil, and dried out the electrical components. I’m not well versed in bugs, so I’m not one to evaluate how they run, but it fired right up and sounded like every other beetle I’ve seen.

I really wanted to stay and watch the rest of the event, but I had chores waiting for me at home. It wasn’t a big loss, I guess. It started raining not long after I left. I’ll be looking at my calendar to see when the next event is scheduled!

any normal fender bender would be a fatality in that thing

You can typically continue to register a car as what it originally was even once it has been used as a donor into a kit. I believe there are specific parts which need to remain (I believe you have to keep a VIN mounted in its original location) but it seems to be fairly open about what you can do. It helps if you are not in an inspection state as well. This is what allows you to make dune buggies and the like. Not much beetle left in that thing though.

Exactly what I thought. Even so, that applies to just about every dune buggy kit out there. The only thing this bug is missing is the fiberglass.

Just take a look at the Manx Kick-Out.

He mentioned that the only original part was the VIN plate. He went down the list and everything from the floor pan to the engine came from a different year.
