Kinja'd!!!

we went to woods hole aquarium over the weekend and all I heard for the rest of the trip was “oh they are so cute I want one daddy lets buy 2 lets buy 5.” Well initial research shows they are a huge and expensive pain in the ass. Have any of you ever owned a seahorse? I mean they dont play with the fish they have, why get others?

Well, the males have the babies, so there’s some kind of teachable moment in there somewhere.

If memory serves they are incredibly sensitive and difficult to keep. Never mind what a pricey and laborious chore a saltwater aquarium of any kind is.

Are your current fish saltwater? Because saltwater fish is a whole ‘nother level from freshwater and freshwater are a lot of work.

I’ve done a lot of stuff with aquariums over the years. People assume that salt water aquariums are a lot more work, but that’s only true if you put delicate organisms into the aquarium and overload the system. People tend to overload both salt and freshwater aquariums by putting in too many fish. If the pump dies, everything dies. The touchiest point in salt aquaria is dealing with evaporation. You have to stay on top of it or the salt balance gets out of whack and kills everything.

All that being said, seahorses require a specialized aquarium. You have to pay close attention to the water balance, but you also have to design it from the start for seahorses. They can also be really finicky with what they eat. With tiny little mouths, they have to have tiny food and it’s best if it’s live food.

Even with my experience, I wouldn’t want to deal with seahorses.

This is a good opportunity to teach them that some animals are ok in captivity when there are trained professionals to take care of them, or when they have been rescued from a dangerous situation and are being rehabilitated until they’re strong and healthy again, but that they’re not the best pets at home.

Maybe a compromise? Offer to take them to the aquarium again to see the sea horses again. See if the aquarium has a kids club they can join (most do) where they can get special perks like “behind the scenes” tours, special activity days, and such. Take them to the library to research sea horses and other ocean creatures. Get a freshwater (much easier than salt) aquarium with tropical fish and have them help you feed them, etc.

There are ways to say “no” without stifling their curiosity and wonder.

If not then simply distract them with something shiny if they bring it up.

Coworkers son wanted jellyfish. So, they decided he had to gather all of the info, design the aquarium, get a grand total price estimate for it, and then save up the money.

That was about 8 years ago, kid never ended up with jellyfish.

I have had a marine/reef aquarium in the past, and even though it was highly successful I was still always too afraid to attempt sea horses. Not only must water quality be maintained to the strictest of standards, but even bullshit things like “does the water flow in the wrong direction for too many seconds” and “does this sponge have the right shape to fit seahorse tails?” must be taken into account.

Seahorses are delicate, fickle little beats. They are not robust at all.

It’s an expensive, soul-crushing endeavor that should be reserved for only the most studious aquarium enthusiasts.

Get it?

Also, ignore salt tanks, acquire dirted planted tanks.
