Kinja'd!!!

Land Cruiser got all new bearings and seals in the front axle. Birfields swapped and re-packed. This is the first auto maintenance (apart from oil changes and tire rotations) that’s gone 100% as expected, on time, with zero unexpected nasties.

Kinja'd!!!

It was oddly satisfying and I’m strangely looking forward to doing it again in another 90k miles or so.

Show off!

I can’t even eat ice cream without unexpected nasties.

But, yes. It was a wrenching weekend... a little bit... tiny bit. Got new tires for the trailer. Trialered a metal table from Craigslist deal. Table is metal... for welding. Soon... When it gets warmer, ill be learning

It’s blissful when it all goes great.... it’s like playing golf.... bad shot, bad shot, oh shit a tree, bad shot.... just when you’re about to give up, you hit an amazing shot and you’ll be like, alright I kinda like this game. It draws you back in, just when you’re about to swear off doing the work, oh that was easy....

I only wrenched on my garage door opener. Dissembled and prepped for a new drive gear.

Still wrenching! Props for fixing it and not just replacing it.

New birfs?

Original birfs, just swapped axle shafts. Will eventually need new spindles though.

Why and why?

I started wrenching on the Cougar this weekend. I was able to get most of the suspension disassembled. Pesky passenger side spindle is not happy relieving itself of the ball joints, though.

It’s a part that really has quite a long service life. Swapping the birfield from left to right involves only changing out the axle shaft, which is quite an easy process. If the driver birfield is now on the passenger side, the joint is now being driven in the ‘opposite’ direction, relatively speaking. This evens out wear and its the equivalent of rotating your tires.

As far as the spindles go, one of the bearings spun and there is an ever so slight amount of wear on the spindle. Ideally is should be replaced to prevent further damage to the bearing, spindle, or hub.

interesting, never heard of swapping birfs from left to right. Mine are in good shape original so I’m not too worried about em, just keep ‘em greased and tires below 35. I had to replace a spindle, I even made a video about it. its not bad but the spindles aint cheap. the new ones have bearings, the old ones have bushings. not sure why, but there you go.

Yeah, not entirely sure why the new ones have needle bearings and not entirely sure it’s an improvement over a brass bushing, but oh well. I’ve read of swapping birfields from left to right, particularly if you hear clicking when turning as a stopgap measure but mine seem to be in great shape so hoping this is more of a PM.
