I am going to look at a 1998 RAV 4 today to buy for my daughter. I posted the CL listing earlier, and it showed up when I posted it, but Kinja decided to misplace it. The Craigslist Post ID is 6029933954

I like that it’s a manual because automatics require maintenance and rebuilding.

Original owner, which is +2 points in my used car buying scheme. Radio and horn don’t work. She has the receipt for the timing belt change.

Thoughts?

They’re good vehicles, essentially the Corolla of the Toyota SUV lineup (which is a plus, in my penny-pinching opinion). Not too powerful for a new driver to get in trouble with, cheap & relatively easy to work on/service, no fatal flaws (especially with a manual), good on gas and not a burden to tag and insure. Sellers asking price is in line with NADA clean retail listing, and Toyota trucks/SUVs (at least in my market area) bring a premium above NADA listing.

My mom drove one for several years. IMHO, this is the best possible version of the cute-ute (aka small crossover) because it’s little, sits up high, and has amazing visibility. Basically the best of all worlds. Pretty reliable, too. Nothing much to break...

Thank you for the reply. You see things as I do. I think her asking price is a few hundred high, but being the original owner -- and honest -- makes up the difference.

They’re solid little vehicles. They have amazing headroom, I was shocked the first time I rode in one. I’m 6' tall, mostly torso, and I could’ve worn a 10 gallon hat in it.

I’ve been curious about that. I hope things are going OK.

Yes, that is a great value. It’s very possible that a couple of fuses are fried for the electronic issues. San Mateo area cars should be in very good condition sitting under a light cloud/fog layer all their life and not subject to anything resembling winter. Clutch and brakes are probably the only wear items that would need to be considered.

Bulletproof cars... both the first gen Rav-4 and CR-V were very cool and dependable cars. My family had both at some point and neither gave any problems. The RAV-4 I remembered having some rear diff grinding issues, but with this being FWD probably not something to worry about – and being in the bay area, you’d be fine without the AWD either way (cheers from an ex-bay oppo!).

Only thing I’d ask is – for around the same money can you get something a bit newer and safer, with this being a car for your kid? These are very bare bones cars….you could probably get something from the early-mind 2000s for not much more (watch out for recalled airbags though). We sold my wife’s 2003 Jeep Liberty for about $5k last year in San Francisco…I’m sure you could find something less truck-line, without 4WD etc. for closer to your price range. If this is just a surface streets car that won’t see much driving you’re probably fine though.

Support the RAV-4 decision though from a jalop POV…I’ve been noticing them a lot lately too, would make for a cool toy to hang on to. Probably the first modern day interpretation of the current crossover market, and way more fun than anything out there today.

Thanks for the reply.

My daughter is currently living and working up in Humboldt County and drives an ‘89 Camry, which is the best car I have ever owned. All the buzz about them when they were new was justified, IMHO.

She loves the RAV4/CRV and this car looks to me about as simple as they come. My theory is that keeping good tires and brakes and shocks on a car makes up a little bit for the lack of modernity.

I was looking at $5k maximum , so this one is in the sweet spot.

Kinja'd!!!

The one in Rally Masters had a cool livery. I wish this game worked on modern Windows.
