Kinja'd!!!

So there’s a 50% 100% chance I might go to Vegas in September. Some questions...

What do flights from YYZ-LAS generally go for?

Anyone tried those track driving experiences there? I know there was a bad accident at one of them lately, but I still kind of want to do a track day.

UPDATE: Confirmed.

I’m currently looking at Dream Racing, seems well reviewed on TripAdvisor.

Thinking about these cars:

Cayman GTS

911 Carrera S

Corvette C7 Z06

Acura NSX (maybe)

They have a package for the 911 + Z06, plus the Cayman is available as a warmup lap addon to the combo. Thinking that or just get 7-10 laps on the Cayman only. NSX isn’t available as any add-on, so I’m leaning towards a no there.

Somehow I’m not overly interested in the Lambos and Ferraris even though that seems like it’s what these things are about, getting bragging rights that “I drive a Lambo on a track”. The instructors there probably not the absolute best in class, but I still want to make it a bit more educational for myself rather than just the “thrill”, e.g. I want to learn more about car control rather than flooring it on the straight. I think I’ll get more out of the lower powered cars rather than jumping straight into a hypercar or race car.

Thoughts?

I see some cheap Air Canada flights going for $227 from YYZ to LAS.

As well, since you mentioned it.

Depends. Are you OK with flying by night?

Joking aside, it depends on the airline. Looks like $400 is around where they are at now. Did you pick a place to stay?

I know a few people that did the NASCAR experience and said it was a lot of fun.

Don’t fly with Air Transat.

As far as flights go, try to book as far in advance as possible, and just pick the cheapest nonstop.

For the car driving experience, they’re safe as long as you aren’t a dumbass. Set your expectations properly before going in, and don’t go hungover from the night before. You get to drive around the speedway with an instructor watching, and they’re going to be even more cautious now than they were previously.

I have done the dune buggies before - They weren’t very fast, but I thought it was fun. Most of them are located near the speedway, and will send a shuttle to your hotel.

If you jump to the American side you can get cheaper flights but typically more of a pain in the arse. We fly to Vegas from Kalispell or Great Falls for 50 bucks sometimes.

I did the Dream Racing thing. Its on the infield of the Nascar track which is awesome to go see anyway, you can drive right up there even if you aren’t participating. Give yourself a few hours if you do the Dream Racing one, lots of cars around, building is full of racing memorabilia and overall cool atmosphere. The air force base was doing some training thing when we were there, there was people doing the Petty experience on the track and I was in a 458, maybe best day ever.

My sister is planning that part, she’s flying in from Hong Kong with my parents so I’m just joining them in for that leg.

Google Flights so far is telling me United is actually more than Air Canada direct.

And since I’m responsible for driving from the airport after landing, flying from Buffalo isn’t really an option for me... I would if I was travelling alone.

AC Direct seems to be my only reasonable option so far.

Flights to Vegas are usually pretty cheap. I drove there in August. It’s an annoying city and I didn’t much care for it, and all I did was crash for a few hours. If you can take the time to check out Death Valley I strongly recommend it. It’s pretty amazing.

Exotics racing is the safest

I’ve done Dream Racing and Exotics Racing next door. They are both awesome and well worth the money if you have realistic expectations. They let you push the limits a bit but the traction control/ basic modes remain on. I would recommend going on a weekday if possible, there was a lot fewer people that way. Getting the lower power cars is definitely more fun as you can push the limits more. The tracks are too small for the really fast cars and it becomes overwhelming.

This was about 4 years ago but I did the V8 Vantage, Cayman R, GTR, and MP4-12C at Exotics Racing and the Cayman was by the far the most fun followed by the GTR. I then went over to Dream Racing for the F430 GT which was awesome because you could really feel the downforce but I could have done 3 times as many laps in a Cayman.

The instructors were top notch, most of them are off season racing drivers and run professional events(at least they were 4 years ago). They are just so used to the people there who are there for bragging rights and not actual enthusiasts. Getting to ride along with actual responsible enthusiasts is a huge breath of fresh air for them. Tell them that you actually want to learn something and they’ll be happy to hear it. Getting the slower cars shows that too.

I just looked at their websites and damn they have gotten big, 3-4x as many options as when I went. I’m gonna have to make a trip back. Also Shelby museum was right down the street.

Good to hear that the instructors are actually decent, I was worried for a bit because right around when I wanted to do one of these there was that fatal accident.

Much much more looking for it, seems like I’m on the right track to pick the slower cars. My family is actually from Tuesday through Friday, so I’m sure it won’t be too busy and they can teach me a thing or two.

Yeah I read about that accident when I first posted this, that’s why I wanted to solicit others’ experiences with them.

The fatal accident was at a new company that seemed shady all around. When they first started their website they had a few pictures of diecast cars even instead of the real thing!
