Garage door opener failure

We have one garage door opener in our two bay garage. This is not an issue as my wife is the only one that parks in the garage as the other bay is filled with Rat-L-Trap.

What is an issue is that the Craftsman 1/2 hp opener failed to chooch and instead made some horrendous noises.

I took the opener apart to find a white powder that was once the plastic teeth of the drive gear. That explains that.

When I looked at the gear there was a number (81B0045) on it and so I went to the gargler to punch in the numbers. Luckily it is a very common gear and for $7 one will be placed in my mailbox at a later date.

What a world we live in.

I have the same opener. I installed myself. Good learning experience: I will buy a house with a working garage door opener next time.

You’ll be in luck if you need parts as they haven’t changed their design since 1984 and the guts seem to be shared among a few different brands.

The best part is that I will be installing a slightly longer plug so it can actually reach the outlet for it. PO had installed a ground plug adapter to get that extra length to reach the outlet. I had planned to move the outlet while I had everything apart but this’ll be easier.

Shear pins and plastic cogs.

Plastic drive gears are never very skookum.

Nope it is an engineered point of failure.
