Two Things That Come To Mind When I Think Of Ontario

The Bombardier Bi-Level Coach and the GM New Look Bus. Until about 5 years ago, the New Look Bus was the TTC. I don’t live in Toronto so I rarely use the TTC, but I think it’d be neat if they brought back a few New Look buses and just tossed them on random routes. As for the Bi-Level Coach, I don’t think GO Transit will ever have any other type of rolling stock. They just can’t.

I remember riding on the last of TransLinks New Look buses when I was little. They had such comfortable seats compared to the current fleet. Also maybe where my love of the sound of Detroit Diesels came from.

I was born in Etobicoke, and lived in Toronto until I was 10. I remember these buses being such a prominent fixture of the city. Even as a teenager and taking weekend trips down to the city, it was usually a New Look Bus that carried us bar to bar late at night. They seemed to reserve the beat up old New Looks for the late night runs. They were loud, dirty and run down, but it was kinda neat to know that in 2011 you were riding on something designed in 1958. They got every penny’s worth out of those old buses.

None of the newer buses seem to stick around as long. Since the retired the last of the New Looks, they’ve been through at least 4 generations of buses, at least here in Metro Van

Just did some quick googling. Their oldest type in the fleet is the Orion VII which were manufactured between 2002-2007. Other than that, everything seems to be from 2008 and newer. According to Wikipedia, when the New Look was in service with the TTC from 1959-2011, the TTC purchased and retired 14 different models of buses from New Flyer, Orion, Novabus and General Motors Diesel Division. This includes the GM Diesel “Classic” which was supposed to replace the New Look, but was fully retired 4 years before the last New Look bus.

Wow that is a long service life. I love it when things outlast their supposed replacements.

It took me embarrassingly long to figure out how to get onto the top decks of the go train. :/

Saskatoon still has a handful of what look like early New-Looks running around. It’s cool to see older equipment still in use.

Those GO Transit GP40s are now Amtrak work engines. They look funny with such long frames, super short noses, and dinky little fuel tanks.

Also, I like the looks of NJ Transit’s (also AMT and MARC) multilevel coaches better. They’re chunky, but purposeful.

I remember riding in the burgundy and cream ones. The street cars were the same IIRC. Shit I’m old.
