!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Ok, if people who are good at face recognition are still only average at recognizing random objects out of context... what does it say about Oppos/Jalopnik posters that they can identify the year, make and model of a car from a fraction of a taillight/headlight/bumper/etc...

Considering all it takes is a string of letters and numbers (W208, E30, etc) for us to see whole cars, idk, you be the judge...

It’s a hive mind thing, individually we have specialized knowledge, together we know all.

Oh, mmm...I don’t know that I really wanted an answer. I just thought it was funny to read about how even people who are good with faces struggle to recognize other objects when there is only a portion of it, and connected it with the people on here who can recognize the model of a truck from a bent rim, etc...

So we’ll be the first line of defense for the earth if space cockroaches ever attack. I suppose we should all keep some Bushmills on hand to make Irish coffees with then. Is anyone on here named Callahan?

I’d call it “Spatial Awareness” if I had a Dr before my name.

SciFi comedy series by Spider Robinson, and I may have given away a major plot point. Dammit.

idk what’s wrong with us — if in fact something is wrong (!) — but as far as ID of random components goes, no matter what else they might be doing at a given moment, car guys (people) never  stop also being car guys, ever; so there’s that... It insures we get lots of practice at that kind of thing haha

I’m awful with faces, and generally clueless when it comes to the “guess the make and model from a little bit of brake light housing” however that’s just because I have no personal experience with whatever car is being posted.

If someone asked me to differentiate a ‘90 Celica from a ‘92 Celica, or a GT from a GTS or GT-FOUR, I could totally do that, just like other people here could tell the difference between a 2008 Malibu LS or a 2009 Malibu LT, based on the presence of body colour mirrors or some such...

TLDR I’m drunk and rambling, and what I’m getting at is we might all be horrible with faces and recognizing specific vehicles in general but there’s so many people here that even if we only knew one model each someone would always know the right answer!

It’s been studied. Locked behind a pay-wall, but basically ‘identification experts’ actually utilize the portion of the brain for identifying their specialty that normal folks and face recognition experts use in identifying human faces. MRIs actually light up a totally different portion of the brain when car folks and birders look at cars/birds than when normal people look at cars/birds and it’s the same portion that regular people and face recognition experts light up when looking at human faces. Theory is that normal people kludge together their image recognition of random objects by parsing them in segments whereas experts have the ‘whole’ stored in a special segment of the brain and can nearly instantly connect it.

I’m not too bad with faces, but I’m horrible with names of people. The reason is that my auditory memory processing takes so much of a back seat to visual/text memory. If I see someone’s face with their name in print, I’m golden.

Since I see vast amounts of cars only that way, I can remember them. *shrug*

When Amazon broke the internet and we were still here it made me realize we, as strange as this conglomeration of people can be, are truly part of the master plan. We the cockroaches of the internet are a superior mutation of human.

I’m not surprised someone knew the answer either.
