As you all probably know since I keep posting about cars I’m kind of interested in, I can’t decide what to buy as a second car. I should get something that doesn’t need to be reliable or practical, since that’s what the Legacy is for. However, I’m liking AWD quite a lot, and the boxer four, but I do need something manual again. I’ve also been feeling the urge to tinker/modify a car, and I’ve told myself I’m keeping the Legacy stock. So lately I’ve been looking for older Subarus. Usually a 2.5RS.
The main issue with this idea is cost, and availability. There aren’t a lot of Subarus around here from before the late 90s, and anytime there’s a 2.5RS for sale, they’re expensive, beat, or both.
I’m not limiting it to those, Though. A first gen Legacy would be interesting, an SVX would be very interesting, a Loyale would be fun. Still kicking myself for not buying the mint 4WD manual one for like $1200.....
So yeah. I still don’t know what I’ll end up buying, but now older Subarus are an option too...

This house around the block from me has a Loyale and used to have an XT. I thought they must be cool people so I tried to chat about their cars but they acted like I was nuts. Sort of the, we have these because they fell into our lap, why would anyone actually want them? Response. Ah well.

Which Legacy do you have? I’m really looking hard at 2004-2008 Legacy B4 2.0Rs here as a cheap, reliable option, and want some confirmation bias.

A 2006 2.5i wagon.
I haven’t had a single problem with it other than a takata airbag recall, but it has so few miles on it that I can’t speak to long term reliability. It’s not the greatest on gas in the city, but it’s really good on the highway, it handles well, the AWD system is great, it’s all around a really nice, practical car. Great daily driver. One day I’ll probably have to do the head gaskets, but that’s to be expected with the EJ25. I think the 2.0 has less of a head gasket appetite, but I don’t know for sure.

40K in kms... that’s practically new still... where I grew up people would worry that it was still in the “break in period”... I grew up with the understanding that 30k miles would be added to a car every year
I just searched for Legacy(s) with 40k as a parameter, and most of them are outside my budget. The ones that are within the budget are at the very top of it. And there are only 5... now I need to think more.

Yeah it was my grandpas car, the stereotypical grocery getter and church car, and that’s about all it did until I inherited it.
