Kinja'd!!!

There are pre-rendered animated feature films that don’t look as good as this video game. This console video game. This screenshot looks like a 10 core xeon and 4 GTX Titans are required for barely playable framerates, but nope. This is the game. It really looks like that.

Wait, I get it. It’s all tight corridors and limited areas, so they can get away with rendering more in a confined space, right? Nope. It’s a giant open world that really looks like that. 3 hours in and I still don’t believe it.

Yeah, I’ve been watching the game play on YouTube, and it’s fantastic. It really does look like that picture.

At least us PC and Xbox users get Forza Horizon 3 which is an absolutely wonderful game. The graphics are beautiful too.

Disclaimer: You’ll need a PS4 Pro for it to look this good.

Source: me, only having a standard PS4. Still looks very good, though. Certain details bug the hell out of me, like how water doesn’t splash or react at all, really, when I traipse through it or how the ring of light doesn’t show up around the Focus when I’m using it anymore (only showed during young-Aloy intro). All nits, to be fair, game is fantastic.

Not really. I have a standard PS4 too, and the only differences so far are better AA and/or increased resolution if you have a 4k TV. Everything else is the same.

IGN did a comparison, and for the most part it looks the same...until the vista shot. Digital Foundry also did a comparison, and you can see that the lightning has a slight, but noticeable, drop in quality pretty consistently throughout the video (i.e. the god-rays are less numerous and blurred for lighting in the same shot at the same angle under near-as-can-be conditions). It’s not huge, but I can see it.

All that said, this game doesn’t quite look so good that it would demand those hyperbolic PC components. It’s a very good implementation of current gen capabilities, but I’m not seeing any particularly demanding effects, and they certainly saved considerable clock cycles by constraining the amount to which the environment interacts with the player to only the tall red grass (side note: I’m annoyed that other foliage equally tall doesn’t count for stealth). PC games have also gotten incredibly well-optimized at this point (i.e. the entire Battlefield series from Bad Company 2 to Battlefield 1)...and they have consoles to thank for that. Ten years stuck on the same hardware has made many of them very good at optimization and, with the new gen mirroring closely the architecture of a standard PC, it’s very easy to carry current optimization tricks over now. My computer could probably run this game using a single HD 7970 (non-GHz...so weaker than what’s in the Pro in terms of TFLOPs) at 1080p pretty easily.
