Kinja'd!!!

Basically everything related to the HVAC system is going absolutely insane. Lots after the jump.

Last week I was driving to a friend’s house when the A/C randomly decided that it was going to go on full blast and not turn off. Even when I turned the car off, the A/C would still blow. We consulted a friend who’s a Volvo tech and he told us to disconnect the battery for the time being and go to the dealer to get the system reprogrammed.

He said that if the reprogramming didn’t work then we would need to buy a new HVAC control module. I hope that doesn’t need to happen because they are not cheap.

Nonetheless, I should have seen this coming and I do still love the car. Oh well, it’s only money, right?

Side note: There is a chance that the Volvo will be replaced during the summer with a small truck or older SUV because we are inheriting a boat and none of our vehicles have the tow capacity for the boat. I’ve also been told by my mother that if the Volvo keeps on costing her money, she’s going to sell it as she has had to dump over $300 into it in the last month for another issue (thanks Uly, really helpful and that was fixed). I think I’m just going to curl up and watch, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and eat Ben and Jerry’s because this is stressing me out.

Go find a self service junkyard and get yourself a new control module.

Nonetheless, I should have seen this coming and I do still love the car. Oh well, it’s only money, right?

That’s about how I feel about my M3.

http://www.car-part.com/mobile/index.htm

Or

https://www.hollanderparts.com

They would be listed under temperature control

Alternatively you could go to http://row52.com  to find a compatable car and pull it yourself but you will also have check the interchange yourself.

Also eBay is good for used parts like this. Lots of yards are listing their parts on there.

Another alternative would be to send yours away for repairs. But there will be a wait for the turnover

HVAC control module? Man, what the hell is wrong with a damn switch? *flick* blower motor on, *flick* blower motor off. That shouldn’t need it’s own control module.

I went to LKQ two weeks ago. They had one V70 and two S60s, both of which were completely cannibalized.

Well damn, they got a pull-a-part near you?

And this is why I like my HVAC systems with 3 knobs for the blower, temperature and air direction. :P

In seriousness though, no Pick-A-Part or salvage yards near you that might have the right part used?

So that’s $300 of work that won’t need done again for a long time but there’s no guarantee it won’t need done on the replacement. Hanging onto the Volvo will cost zero dollars, replacing it will cost several thousand. Sure, hanging onto an aging vehicle will cost a bit more in maintenance than a newer one, but there are major advantages to hanging onto a vehicle you’re familiar with that you enjoy.

My daily driver (and currently only legally driveable vehicle) is 26 years old with 320,000 miles. Sure I’ve got around $1500 or so in it in the last year and a half, but realistically am I ever going to find a reliable vehicle for that? I’ll keep throwing parts at my old Jeep. Maybe I’ll even pick up another couple... or fix the ones I already have.

There are about 12 different CCMs that were issued on those cars. Even if you get the right one, it will NOT work. Once the CCMs are flashed to a car, if I’m not mistaken, they are married to that car and one from another car can’t be reflashed to another

Yeah, I should have clarified that LKQ is a pull-a-part.

That’s frightening. DO you know what could be causing the perma-blow? When we reconnect the battery, the fan and blower start spinning at full speed.

This is what I meant by pull a part, I’ve been to an LKQ in florida before.

Your actions make sense. What you’re saying makes sense. My mother would rather buy a vehicle that, “doesn’t break,” rather than fix the mostly operable Volvo. I don’t understand.

Oh oh oh. I didn’t know this was a Real Thing. The closest location is two hours from me in Winston-Salem. LKQ is pretty good for what it is.

I don’t either. What vehicle are you going to get that “doesn’t break”? The ones that break less often have less parts availability so they cost more to purchase when they inevitably break because nothing is going to not break. And $1500 over a couple years is way better than a payment on a car new enough to come with a warranty.

If I had a nickel for every time my mother threatened to sell my S-Class after that $5,500 ABC pump...I wouldn’t still owe her $2,500 for an ABC pump replacement.

My mother says that the next thing that goes wrong comes from my pocket. Scary because I work two days a week at a café.

What year is your S-Class?

Confirmed, CCMs once programmed to one car cannot be installed and programmed on other cars. Married to initial VIN when new.

The fan and fan power unit can be installed on other vehicles since they are not modules

Sigh, welcome to Volvo ownership. Dead reliable for a year, some major $600+ repair, fine for another year, rinse and repeat; still, my family’s totally behind it because a car payment of $600(x2) annually is actually quite nice if you do the maths. Of course, we’ve never owned a GM product so maybe you guys are more used to the “wait three years and replace the whole car” maintenance regimen.

Yeah we can’t afford the, “wait three years and replace the whole car maintenance program,” and even if we did it wouldn’t be necessary as the TrailBlazer ran perfectly fine for thirteen years. Sure, it wasn’t the greatest vehicle ever built, but it wasn’t horrible either. My mother’s Equinox has not had a single problem in it’s lifetime and it was built in 2010. I’m not saying GM makes fantastic vehicles, but they’re not Lada’s.
