Here's what it's like underneath a 33-year old shoebox

Kinja'd!!!

I topped off the coolant and and jacked up the bastard in an attempt to spot any obvious coolant leaks, but also inspect the front suspension a little more, as it rides like clunky garbage. Also there’s an obvious leak from the oil pan gasket, but it can’t hurt to look for more.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

First thing I noticed was the total lack of rust. I did crawl under it the night before I bought it, but that was just to make sure there was something resembling metal left at all. Underneath it now on jack stands and a light, damn this thing is clean. I suppose all the leaking fluids helped that too!

Kinja'd!!!

Look at all that oil... It appears replacing the pan gasket doesn’t look as easy as I had thought. Unless the pan just kind of shoehorns out of the subframe, it’s gonna suck.

I didn’t see any visible coolant leaks. There’s never been a puddle underneath. So let’s move on to the suspension. Shocks are toast, but I knew that. Started looking around and found one torn boot. No worries, just something to do. At least my cv boot on this side is pristine.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Unfortunately, such was not so on the other side. I touched to other cv boot and was besieged by shiny grease. Oh goody. The boot was covered with heavy condensation as well. I started wiping it down but it still looked ok... So I kept on looking, and I used the recording function on my S6 camera which conveniently keeps the flash on whilst filming. Aaaaand found it.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Pardon the language. Looks like a few bushings could use some replacing as well.

So there you have it. Not too shabby, but lot’s of work left to be done. This coupled with everything under the hood, I hope to serve as a warning for people curious about owning these old dogs. The list of needs continues to grow and grow.

As for me, I’ll enjoy this challenge.

Monet you have a definitive list of what’s wrong you find out you’re wrong. Oh, and that t’hing you already have marked on the list is caused by something you don’t. I discovered my rear shocks were rusted through while playing with the exhaust. Anymore I shrug my shoulders and say I’ll get to it eventually. One just has to do the most important things first.

I love how doggo has a bed in the garage too.

I think I have a cv boot issue by how mine drives but haven’t taken the time to look. It’s also hard to tell when the suspension is shot!

Has the leaking of various fluids prevented rust? I think that’s how my S10 has made it 22 years with only one rust spot (above the left rear wheel).

What I want to see is how tiny the rear diff is. Mine is teeny and it’s meant for 200hp in a 3200lb car.

Good lord, that has less rust than my 2014 FieSTa. Fuckin’ amazing. Leaks way mode fluids, though.

Probably. But now I have to fix all the things that leak -- or not.

Oh, but there are degrees of “shot.” Mine sounds like I’m crashing into a brick wall when I hit a very small bump in the road.

It’s kinda funny. Your car is clean underneath, suspension looks alright, rides like garbage.

my car is disintegrating into the ground, every bushing is shot, and it drives like a factory 99 camry.

I think we’re about equal. Expansion joints are terrifying.

We have several roads here where the right side of the right lane is concrete, with giant craters every time they intersect with an asphalt cross street. I avoid those lanes at all costs in the Fiat since my wheels are apparently made of papier-mâché, but the Tercel is so slow I have to use them. It’s like being on one of those grocery store rides for small children.

Photogenic doggo. I also curse while working under my car. Reminds me of the time I did the oil pan gasket on the 7 to discover copious amounts of sludge.

The Tercel is painfully slow, but that’s part of the charm. I can’t imagine how much a 4AGE swap would cost.

Oh yeah, I don’t mind the slow at all though. It’s the bouncing that’s a little nausea-inducing. I can’t wait until I can get her back on the road to go camping...I just need to not work 65+ hours a week first. :(

Nice and shiny jack stands! ;)

I cannot tell you how jealous I am that a car that old that hasn’t been locked away in a garage all its life, can be that rust free underneath.
