Does it run on Android?

Very nice. I notice there isn’t a Blackberry button again.

How does it feel without it.

Is there still a trackpad to slide your finger over? I tend to use the trackpad to operate my Classic so I’m not putting finger marks on the screen or accidentally clicking on something while I intend to swipe up or down.

No, it runs Sony Orbis OS from PS4. See the triangle, circle and square buttons? It’s clearly a PlayStation.

Well I moved to a Priv since 2015, so I’m very much used to it. It’s a standard Android phone with BlackBerry’s touches.

The keyboard is capacitive, you can slide your finger on the entire keyboard for gestures. Acts as a scroll pad in documents, divides up into 3 zones to autocomplete words while typing, and you can use it to select text. This feature was carried over from the Passport.

Also supposedly they were working on a “pointer” mode for you to use the keyboard like a trackpad with a mouse cursor. But that feature was pulled and appears in developer options in a handful of devices.

Oh okay, it looks like the OS on my Vizio remote.

Cheers mate.

I’m really tempted by this phone as my Classic is getting old now and I was looking at a Priv for quite a while but constantly had a niggle I should go for the Passport instead.

Definitely get the KEYone instead. Despite the SD600 series SoC, it is noticeably smoother than my Priv.

And unless you don’t use anything other than calling and e-mail, don’t get BB10. App support is going from bad to non-existent real fast.

I’ve never known BB for any great selection of apps. And I’ve never been an app kind of guy. I have Accu Weather, Wisepilot and Fancy Tran. The rest just onscreen bookmarks for different forums I’m on.

Well me neither, but when BlackBerry’s own MDM (Good For Enterprise/Good Work, now called BlackBerry Work) didn’t support BB10, I knew it was time. That’s what made me ditch my Classic last year.

I may go back to liking a physical keyboard. .

!

On a Z30 now (from Classic, 9370 and Z10 before that), but probably preordering KEYone. If only “Mercury” had stuck... oh well. Nothing’s going to stop me from buying the last BlackBerry-designed handset. I’ll miss BB10, but the hardware will be worth it. There is a question of whether the audio is stereo or mono, could you shed any light on this?

I tried to get a FLAC file on it last night but couldn’t get it working as the device wasn’t really set up for anything, plus the venue was quite loud.

Kevin seems to indicate it’s 1 speaker.

Can you still buy the Passport on your side of the pond? ShopBB just recently sold out here. I almost bought the PRIV during the Black Friday sale for US$299, but stupidly hesitated. I dearly miss the blue Classic I got my hands on but returned. Priv and KEYone will be very different beasts than PP and Classic due to the OS gap. It’s a necessary move, but one that sacrifices quality for quantity.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I take it you were at the CB meetup? Seems like it was a good time. The Z30's speakers really make my job tolerable, but external audio won’t matter so much by the time I get my hands on the KEYone. It’ll feel a bit empty buying a BlackBerry device without the incentive of supporting future development, but this phone will work for me for a long time to come.

That’s really cool. Definitely something I’d go to if it weren’t thousands of miles away. It’s a good sign that TCL seems to be reaching out to CB and the community; it wouldn’t be hard for them to do a KEYone in a couple of years with upgraded internals I suppose, still retaining the BlackBerry DNA. Hopefully sales can support something like that.

Blackberrys are getting harder and harder to find.

My go to is carphonewarehouse. But to find a Priv or a Passport I’ve got to really look now.

Vodafone stock the Classic, and they’ll be stocking the Blackberry Leap soon (currently out of stock) but there tariffs are crazy.

Yeah, it seems that they silently stopped Passport production sometime last year. The Classic is totally out of stock from reputable retailers here. I hope they throw in some sort of preorder incentive for KEYone, but I’m probably hopping on board either way.

My Z30 was giving me a hard time last night and took about an hour to get out of a boot loop, so I backed it up on BB Link and did a factory reset. Now I’m trying to reload at least my media from Link and the restore function keeps telling me to make sure the device is on and connected. I have hundreds of travel photos that I really don’t want to lose, and glitches like this are making me slowly accept an Android future of decent software support.

I’ve been really lucky with my Classic so far.

As long as the phone had a physical keyboard I’d be happy regardless or Androis, Windows, or whatever.

But I know Blackberry, I trust Blackberry and want to keep with Blackberry any way I can as long as they are going.
