Sometimes people comment about the alleged "range anxiety" of owning an electric vehicle...

Kinja'd!!!

And I understand all that. Batteries breaking down over time, lack of charging stations compared to typical gas stations, I can dig it. But how about the potential range anxiety of a 37-year old pickup? 240-something miles on a 14 gallon tanks. A brutal 17.2 miles per gallon on a 4-banger.

How do I feel about it? I say shit like, “DAMN that’s bad!” Then I fill, up, smile, and drive home. If this thing got 12 miles per gallon, I still wouldn’t care.

12 mpg? Challenge accepted.

I usually get right around 15, the worst I ever got was 13.

3,000 rpm at 65 MPH... now that’s brutal though. The 5-speed struggle is real. My previous car was like that. The current one with a 6-speed doesn’t hit 3k until 78 MPH, which is nice. Trade-off is there is no power below 3k, so you do have to downshift to pass anything on the freeway.

That makes me feel better about the 26 mpg my 4-cylinder compact car has managed during the time I’ve owned it. I can’t imagine getting less than 20 mpg out of a 4-cylinder engine.

Jeebuz, my 1990 isuzu with 4 WD and 31.5"x10.5" tires fully loaded with a topper gets about 20 mpg. But it also has like a 12.5 gallon fuel tank so I fill it every 200 miles. It also has fuel injection so I think that helps a bit.

My teammate on the LeMons Rally told me the Niva was exactly the same as a Tesla because we had range anxiety.

At the time we had missed the exit for the gas station we’d been planning to stop at, and so we just kept going to the next one, which it turned out was about 50 miles down the road. Between knowing the capacity of the Niva’s fuel tank (43L, not big) and knowing what we’d been averaging so far (23mpg) that trip, I was pretty sure we’d be fine, but when he asked what the furthest I’d ever gone on a tank was, 317.1km, he wasn’t excited to know that’s where it ran out. I think at the time we were just passing 330.

Now the Jeep’s got itself its own range anxiety problem. The fuel gauge works, but when I changed the pump behind a mini mall, the parts store special replacement pump didn’t exactly fit properly with the pickup tube. But it was the only option in town, so I jammed it together with a hose clamp holding things together for good measure. Apparently the hose clamp solution failed, because I’m now getting out-of-gas symptoms around the half-tank level, which go away when I top up. Hurray for not pulling gas through the pickup sock...

That would be OK for the track, or maybe a weekend drive, but would drive me nuts on a regular basis. When we were last car shopping, I looked into a new Fit, (we had a 1st-gen for a while that I liked) but finding out that they switched from a 5-speed to a 6-speed with the same ratio scratched it off the list before I even drove it.

5th gen gets about 20 MPG average. That’s on my 10-minute-one-way commute that gets up to 55 for about a mile. I’m at 3700 RPM at 70 MPH on the interstate, which makes the mileage go down a bit more. The H was not Honda’s most fuel-efficient engine.

My V50 holds 15 gallons. Conveniently, that’s also the MPG rating it most commonly achieves. I fill it up usually at just around 200 miles when the needle hits the red. Combination of a cold-start 1.5 mile school commute and hard-mountain driving on the weekends will get that out of a naturally aspirated 2.4 5-cyl. I can’t imagine it with the turbo, it would probably get like 10 MPG with my driving style/schedule.
