Tell me about car shows.

Kinja'd!!!

So I registered for my first real car show, Toyotafest in Long Beach on May 6. I have done C&C and various meet ups, but never entered a real show. Have you entered your car in a show? What should I expect? Can we picnic at the car? (No dogs rule is already a bummer. Toby loves C&C.)

Pointers would be appreciated, especially as to car show etiquette so I don’t make an ass of myself. Thanks. Have some Replacements on me. They were glorious.

You have to wear a Hawaiian shirt covered in cars, have a crappy transistor blaring do wop and have those creepy timeout kids leaned up against the car.

Or just go and have a good time.

Make a giant ass sign to sit in front of your car listing all the facts (and “mods”) that no one gives a shit about. Put models of vaguely similar cars (never identical, because that would make sense) on the engine for full “here’s my toy car, here’s my real car”. Also, find a Celica Hawaiian shirt and a Toyota lawn chair and sit behind your car looking sweaty and grumpy.

It’s funny how immediately several of us went to the same spot of the weird underbelly of car shows. I remember going to Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale my first time and thinking...”this is like a pretty good car show, but without all the creepy stuff”.

Car shows are a lot of fun. My wife and I have been to several and we’ve entered my mother’s 1966 in a few. Some will bring lawn chairs and sit by their ride all day. That’s not me, though. We will bring chairs, but we like to walk around and enjoy the other vehicles as well.

Main thing is just have fun and be respectful. I always enjoy talking cars, so it’s always fun to answer questions. Keep in mind that some people are not as knowledgeable, so don’t act like they should know everything. Don’t diss somebody’s incorrect knowledge and definitely don’t diss somebody else’s car if they are around. We all have our own tastes, so keep that in mind.

I’ve never been in a car show, but I have attended plenty. You always see people picnicking at their cars. A lot of owners are kind of stand-offish, but a lot also love to talk about their cars. Etiquette is more just common sense than anything. No touchy, of course. Inviting others to get a closer look and sit in it is okay, but rare (which makes you even cooler if you do it). Somewhere I have a picture of my then 1 year old behind the wheel of an MG TD.

I’ve entered my S600 into a few shows. It’s a great way to find likeminded owners, especially if its a make oriented show.

Personally, I hate entering cars shows. Not saying everyone should because of my experiences but I’ll share anyways.

I worked for a car collection-mainly brass era cars. But they did have a 1959 AC Ace (what the Cobra was made out of) With 25k miles on it. All original-great car. It didn’t really fit in their collection so they wanted to sell it. There was a large regional British car show nearby and they asked me if I wanted to bring the car + put a for sale sign on it. A guy pulled in with a trailered freshly restored one with 20 miles since being done. This dude was extremely high strung. Within minutes, he was already telling me things that were wrong with ‘my’ car. (It was 100% original and unrestored) I was ready to pop him in the. face by 9am.

I’ve entered my race cars + race bikes at a big 3 day racing show a few times. It was 60 miles away. So I’d drive up + back Thurs setting up-then up + back Fri + Sat-then the long day Sunday when you have to wait till the show ended-then awards-then the big fight to get all the cars out the one door with everyone manuvering their 24ft trailers in place. And you have to be ready to answer the same questions over and over and over......

I have entered in one day downtown type car shows that I have enjoyed myself-but i think it was a much as I was walking around checking everything else out than leaning on my car.

I know many people that DO enjoy it very much-so YMMV. Maybe its because I’m a racer-and I get bored quick just sitting around.
