Damn, why did Mitsubishi have to make the Mirage ugly?

Kinja'd!!!

Inoffensively-bland styling in a vibrant color worked well for it. The facelift was a while ago, sure... but a cheap, lightweight car with 3 pedals would be so satisfying to cane daily without fear of previous maintenance, parts failures, or speeding tickets.

Who knows? Maybe the new fascia is added incentive to beat the hell out of the thing.

I don’t mind the facelift, actually, as long as its on the hatchback model. The “G4" model (the sedan) is goofy looking.

I wouldn’t rule out a mid-weekday test drive one of these days. I probably wouldn’t buy one over something older and more interesting, but the minimalistic approach makes for a rare treat in the current field of feature-heavy transportation appliances.

It’s still not a terrible design compared to some overwrought ones out there. The sedan doesn’t appeal to me either as it defeats the purpose somewhat. I thought the styling was off to a better start vs. the competition, though now it seems to have joined it.

Agreed, my press loaner had way to many gizmos imho. I wanted a bare bones manual. The 3 cylinder make a surprising good noise too

The only other modern subcompact I’ve driven was an Opel Corsa E rental- heavier and probably more refined, with a 4-banger of similar displacement and comparable power. One disappointment was that the top end was lacking and it hated to rev past 5k, even though it didn’t always have enough to give in the middle; I imagine the Mitsubishi engine may be a bit better to wind out, but how was it for you? Still, driving on Croatian roads made it pleasant. Kind of explains satisfaction with the Yugo.

Well it’s was in America so automatic cut so you put petal to the floor, it pegged itself to a rpm and just pulled (relativly) until I ran out of space

CVTs are definitely a different experience (and one that my slipping AOD is emulating pretty well). They mute the engine’s character to an extent, though I guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing in most of the cars they come equipped in. The last-gen Versa I drove with a CVT was new levels of soullessness, but the Mirage just doesn’t strike me the same way. That Versa somehow enabled me to zip through Northern VA rush hour traffic better than anything, but that’s really these cars’ element.
