It’s their own fault for making it so ugly.

The front page is a circlejerk of “why don’t automakers offer things we want”/ “they made a thing we asked for, but we’re not going to buy it”. The sooner you learn to not look at the comments or not take them seriously, the better.

Man I actually like it tho :( There’s so many boring-looking cars on the road and it’s nice to see a company make something so ridiculous and over-the-top, especially on a car that’ll be as crazy to drive as the Type R.

I’m really worried that Honda will charge close to $40k for it. They tried $30k for a ‘Mugen’ Civic that had badges, a wing, some fancy foot petals and not much else. The current Civic can already be optioned up to $30k. It’s hard for me to see this anywhere near the low thirties given that...

If this car fails, Honda will give up on fast cool cars for another generation and I don’t want that.

That’s why I’ve pretty much stopped going on the front page, just way too much negativity anymore. There used to be all kinds of interesting discussions in the comments a few years ago, not sure what happened.

it will fail.

this is going to be a 50K car here in canada. no one is going to buy it.

unfortunately, you have to pay to play, and people dont realize that shit is expensive.

Is $35-40k all in really all that overpriced considering its competitors though? A base STi is $35k and the RS or Golf R both start at ~$36k so it’s not like that’s out of the ballpark. Considering new cars are expensive as shit to begin with I don’t really think it’s all that bad of a deal.

Yes, it is overpriced. It’s a Civic, not an STi or RS or Golf R, all of which aren’t front wheel drive, and aren’t riced from the factory.

You forgot the comment on the LC-F:

Holy Fucking Shit.

You couldn’t fault them if they were talking about an ES, but saying that about an LC is just painfully stupid.

I know what happened. *Looks through window into stormy night.

Not so long ago Jalopnik, in an attempt to get more readers, decided to start doing “buying guides” of various cars. At first everything started off fine. They reviewed hatches, sedans, and coupes. Then they suddenly took a more solemn tone and started slipping in CUVs, particularly luxury C/SUVs. Which was odd given the nature of the website. I remember when it first started. I was scrolling threw the comments of one of the CUVs when I saw THE comment that started it all. It was making an excessively serious complaint about the seats in the then new Jeep Cherokee. It wasn’t exaggerated for comedic affect as petty complaints often are, but it was dead serious about how uncomfortable these seats where. And that’s when it all went down hill. Slowly but surely the comments and articles drifted from discussing the best auto crosser you could buy for a loaf of bread and two buttons and what materials the interior of cars were made of. And I don’t really know how to end this like a horror story so I’m going to say “then everyone died, the end.”

That’s what I’m afraid of - the Type-R is the wacky car that Honda has needed for a very long time but the cost of entry is probably going to be silly in Canada. With the base STI being $38k MSRP the Type-R will have to start under this price, or be fully loaded if it’s starting at this price.

Golf R actually MSRPs for $39k. I bet there are deals for less than that, but If I’m wrong, then that’s a $40k+ car post purchase.

Kinda surprised to learn the STi is now $35k. It used to be $40k, but I suppose new competition from the RS forced scooby’s hand.

Golf R, RS and the Scooby all have AWD. They can get away with closing in on $40k because that is a serious performance advantage. The R will not be AWD. No matter how much power they’re gonna squeeze out of those 4 gerbils, it simply will not be as quick off the line as all the others it will have to compete against as a $40k car.

The case for the car a $30k becomes much better. The Focus RS, Non-Sti WRX and GTI all cost less, but the Type R offers more than they do, and $5k a pretty good barrier against people who would wonder if they should consider something with AWD which will be faster.

If I were selling the Type R, I’d set it at $28k. But I’m not. Honda is, and they’re going to want as much as they can get for it.

The sti is just an impreza the RS a focus and the Golf R just a golf. They are all entry hatchbacks at the end of the day with a shit ton of options. There’s no difference between them and the civic type r except for the drive wheels

I...don’t know about all that. Kinda par-for-the-course in this market segment now, excluding the Golf R.

We want exciting not ugly and overwrought! Also like others have mentioned for the price you have some strong competition including some cars that have a better fit and finish to match the aesthetics.

Everyone will scream Honda reliability but who knows, turbos aren’t known for their longevity so I’m curious to see what Honda reliability will look like in 5 years. Remember many people who buy Hondas expect it to keep running on the original oil from factory and any idea of “maintenance” is completely foreign to them.

Way more so for the U.S. market than the U.K./Euro market.

I could see this in the $25k-$35k. I see it as the same market as a GTI and other hot hatches. I like the new direction Honda has chosen, it is outside the box for them. I like what I see, but will reserve final judgment for when I see it in the sheet metal.
