A ‘00 Mazda Protege with only 8890 miles on it for 6000$? Who the hell (didn’t) drive this thing? Every Protege on CL around here has six-digit mileage. If I remember correctly, then buying an old car with so few miles means it either sat for a long time or made many short distance trips so the engine may have never gotten up to operating temp for long. Seals and other rubber gone dry-rotted would be issue to look for. The gas tank could be bad if it sat for so long.

From the seller:

2000 Mazda Protege one owner it has 8800 original miles you have to see it to believe it it is like brand new you could take it from Charlotte North Carolina to California and back without no problems whatsoever it only has 8800 miles on it it’s like buying a new car it speaks for itself it has power windows power door locks tilt Cruise it has everything you want for comfortability and reliability asking $6,000 best offer responsible offers only will not answer to no BS offers

The LX is the middle child of the three trims. It doesn’t get the allow wheels of the ES but it’s far better optioned than the base DX. On the flip side, it shares 4x100 wheel bolt patterns with the Miata so it wouldn’t be hard to find an affordable nice set of shoes for it.

I was in the market for an automatic DD to backup the Miata but while I was looking more toward new hatches, this could be a solid alternative provided it’s mechanically sound (and not rusty like most Proteges).

So, would you pay 3k$ above KBB for an almost-new 2000s beige beater?

Those also have the less powerful 1.6 and not the 2.0 like the DX. The DX also had the same 5 bolt pattern as the later protege5.

I’m just not sure if in 2000 if the 2.0 was available then.

One of the worst things you can do to a car, is not drive it. I wouldn’t touch it personally.

If it was a Mazdaspeed I’d consider it, but not for a run-of-the mill Protege. I’d rather have a 2010 Mazda3 with the 2.3 and around 70-80k miles for that price than the older tech Protege with who knows what issues lurking from sitting so long.

As I former p5 owner, I am befuddled by this.

But I know there is no way in hell I’d drop 6k on an old protege

Been looking for cars in the 15-20 year old range myself. Whenever I see sub-50k on the odometer I start to wonder if it has been maintained well. Whether it’s short distance driving to get groceries or just a weekender, sometimes the maintenance intervals were determined by mileage and not time. Rubber and fluids wear out even if miles aren’t put on the odo.

If they have records to back things up, might be worth negotiating. Wouldn’t buy at that price though.

A car that is built to be thrashed and put up wet having neither done to it in its whole life? Seems sketchy and I would avoid.

In my experience with 10-15 year old cars with low mileage (both early 90s Hondas and one of which I know for a fact was owned by a little old lady who did dealer maintenance), run if you don’t see at least around 8-10k per year on a ride.

Seems concerning to me. Would not. I’d be more tempted if it were a Protoge5 though.

I’d give $2,500 for it, tops.

The issue with cars like that is that once they start getting driven regularly, shit breaks. A lot. My first car was a ‘92 Chevrolet Beretta - owned by an old lady and bought for me by my grandpa in July 2005 with just 71,000 miles. It had sat. A lot.

Once I got it and started driving it every day (including just cruising around for hours on end with my friends), something seemed to be broken on it at least once every 3-4 weeks. And I didn’t really beat on it. I just drove it. It was so slow that driving it hard was zero fun, anyway.

Who the hell (didn’t) drive this thing?

A person too ill to drive, or a person that passed away.
