My dog's gonna kill that other dog (dog rant ahead)

And I will be so mad when it happens, since it won’t even be the other dog’s fault. Some lady insists on walking her German Shepherd off leash through a neighborhood full of dogs and kids. Both times I’ve come across her with my dog, the dog had run away from the owner to run up to mine. The dog doesn’t have the training or discipline to be off leash (no dog should be off leash). Both times have been friendly, but through chance only. This morning was below freezing, but last weekend was above 50, as will next week. I’d have one of my kids with me in that weather. My dog is friendly without them, but she will, and has, protect her smaller pack members from strange dogs. Last time a dog got off lead (honest mistake in that scenario) and I had a kid with me I was lucky I was talking to a neighbor that fostered guiding eyes dogs who was able to separate the two, since my dog had her jaws around the other animals throat the moment it came up to and barked at the stroller.

Nice weather is coming, and if I run into this lady and her dog again I’ll probably have a kid with me, and my dog will defend. It will probably end poorly for that dog. And it shouldn’t, since that dogs behavior and safety should be her owners responsibility, and she is not doing it properly.

This stuff drives me insane. Dogs are NOT TOYS. I would say something, it probably won’t make an impression on that kind of thoughtless person but it’s worth a try.

Oh, I said something. Got my dog to the other side of the street and told if I had a kid with me it’d be a dog fight. No response, no apology, nothing.

And when she goes home, she’ll whine to her husband about the crazy guy with the out of control dog who threatened her with a fight. I feel bad for that dog... she’s gonna learn the hard way at some point and it’ll suffer for it.

Most places have leash laws. I’d print out a copy and give it to her next time. Tell her you will be calling animal control every time you see her with her dog off-leash.

That’s exactly it. The dog will suffer for her stupidity, and that’s a shame.

I called this morning to check, but too early for the officer to be in and answering phones.

Ugh. We have several folks in my neighborhood who just let their dog out in their unfenced front yards to use the bathroom. Two German shepherds have run after and attacked my dog while she was on a leash and more chihuahuas to count have THOUGHT they were going to attack and nearly become breakfast. We have very limited safe areas to walk.

It worries me because, while my dog has adoption papers that list her breed as a border collie/springer spaniel mix, there’s definitely other breeds mixed in. One of which is banned. Regardless of leash laws I’m afraid of what might happen if someone goes to the cops or the city.

That’s so shitty, particularly the banning of breeds. As long as you have papers, I’d hope you’d be OK.

This. The worst in my neighborhood is the guy who always walks his Golden off leash is the same guy who is always up in everyone’s business about minor HOA violations with their yards. I’ve mentioned several times that both the HOA and county have rules against off-lead dogs, but he doesn’t get the hypocrisy of letting his dog wander all over the neighborhood (I’ve found her in my garage before) while complaining that some of the rocks in the Jones’s retaining wall don’t quite match in color and they should get a letter about it, because “she’s a nice dog”. My dogs are generally nice too, but they can be set off by who knows what so they are always on-lead unless it’s at a dog park. Pics of my vicious doggos for your time. They’re oddball mixes but someone needed to rescue them.

I share your frustration on this. I don’t own a dog, but many of my neighbors do, and many of them are apparently so poor that they can’t buy even a length of rope to attach to their dog’s collar.

I’ve had a couple dogs charge at me while I’m out on a run - so far they’ve all stopped short, but I’m not exactly eager to wait and see if they’re friendly either. I’d hate to have to try to hurt a dog but I’m not interested in bite wounds either.

I grew up with dogs and even the best-trained dog is still a predatory pack animal with predatory pack animal instincts- you have to keep them under watch.

About as smart as announcing ahead of time that your dog has aggression issues that you’re not addressing. The other owner is a POS, but if you know of issues and are just going to be “LOL sorry my dog is gonna kill your dog cuz u’re dum’, you’re part of the problem.

No, my dog isn’t aggressive. That’s why she lied down passively this time. But she’s protective of her family if animals come running up, which is the reason leash laws exist.

No, it’s just that she’s big and protective of the wife and little ones. At 100lbs, and other at about 60, it’d be a handful.

If your dog is willing to clamp it’s jaws onto another dog’s throat, it’s aggressive. Because there are leash laws, we should consider a dog that does that aggressive. This is just as much a reason that dog owners get bad names as the jackwagons that don’t follow leash laws. My dog won’t attack as long as you don’t “X”. No, then you still have things to work on. If you can lose control of your animal in “X” situation, all it says is that you don’t have control of your animal.

I usually go with the ever popular “well how the fuck are strangers supposed to know that? My mom has been attacked by an off lead dog” also “you do realize there are people with phobias right?”

You can also shame them for being a bad Christian, but that only works on older people.

I disagree. A dog that is passive in all scenarios except when it is legitimately defending it’s family. I’m not an agressive person, but I will fight in defense of my family all the same. She’s not agressive without the kids, she’s not agressive when the other dog is leashed. But an unleashed, uncontrolled dog is a threat to her family.

No papers required for a lab, actually. And my dog is perfectly safe if we all follow the rules. Huh, which may be why rules exist. But threaten her family and she’ll defend it. Break into our house unannounced, or run up uncontrolled towards our baby, and she’ll act appropriately. And no, appropriately isn’t “lying down and doing nothing”.

Honest question: at what point is it OK for my dog to bite? Does it half to get bit first? What if someone breaks into my house? I don’t think you can expect an animal, short of a trained service dog, to be 100% passive in all scenarios.

Call the cops when the dog is off the leash for sure as it poses a danger. Put it this way, if a random German Shepherd (or any huge dog) comes running at a cop they are putting a bullet in it immediately. They will likely treat this very seriously.

Oh yeah. My next door neighbor was out walking her dogs (two show Salukis) one time and had a panic attack when the golden came wandering up. I wasn’t there to see it but according to my wife she sat down in the road hugging her dogs and started screaming screaming. He just doesn’t get it. Some people suck.
