I don’t work yet, so I drove my car home in light traffic after getting it serviced like I stole it. Oh, you engine shows minimal wear, good time for some more red line in 2nd.

The thermostat in my pickup doesn’t open until it’s 3/4 the way up, it does it every time and it always stresses me out. But then it drops to 1/3 in about 1 minute and never goes up again.

I’ve actually had a spot of bother with mine too. It’s normally just on the cool side of the temp sign in the center. But recently it’ll start to go to the other side of the marker and fluctuate around and come back. I replaced the thermostat and temp sensor months ago and properly bleed it. My only guess now is that air’s somehow gotten in since then. :(

It’s never been above 50%, let alone 80. These guys have the fan kick on usually right at 45%.

If I wasn’t replacing the windshield in my suburban tomorrow I’d offer to walk down the street and help you replace your thermostat. By help I mean I’d just pet the doggo while you did all the work. This offer is entirely me sided.

Well done. My bike died on my way home yesterday. Ended up walking her home. It was sunny and 75F so it wasn’t too bad.

Hmm..runs cooler at higher RPM. How’s the impeller on your water pump holding up?

Not sure. I think I might just replace the water pump too.

I think I would change it. I’m betting the impeller has eroded. I one time replaced on an escort because of those symptoms. The impeller resembled what you would find in a blender more than a water pump. it was paper thin and razor sharp!

Keep in mind that most thermostats will fail in the OPEN position. the little wax pellet inside degrades to the point where it can no longer provide resistance to the spring, meaning the thermostat will open at lower temperatures. I’ve only once (in a 20 year career) found a thermostat stuck closed. the strap that holds the spring on broke on one side, causing it to twist and jam shut.

I also got in the habit of testing thermostats before installing them. Put it in a pot of water and boil it. check the temp with a thermometer. if the water reads 140 and your stat is open, that’s an issue. also, if you’re water is boiling and the stat is closed, that’s bad too. A lot of stats are made oversees and do not work properly. find one made in the US. (i believe NAPA’s are made in NJ)
