Metro Detroit’s all-new Oppo-Meet is coming soon! But we need YOUR help.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
As this year’s official unofficial organizers, MontegoMan and I would like to shoot for sometime in late April or early May. On a weekend, of course. Let’s see if we can find something in that range that works for as many Oppos as possible. What works for you?
Also, what time to begin, and how long are you willing to hang out for?

Thanks to CaptDale, we have the location of a discreet lot on E Grand Blvd in Detroit, where we’ll let him think we’re meeting. MWAHAHAHA (Don’t wait for us too long, Cap!)
Meanwhile, we’re going to have our little get-together somewhere else. We could meet at a park, like on Hines Drive, or Metro beach... Or we could take a cue from Jalopnik’s annual pre-NAIAS event and go karting. There are also some tracks in the area (M1 Concourse, Waterford Hills) to consider.
Not gonna lie, I like the park idea a lot. It would keep cost-to-entry dirt cheap, which would be a great way to insure that we can include as many Oppos as we can.

Obviously, if we go to a karting place, we should do some karting. We could also hold some event at a track, but for year one of the Oppo-Meet, I don’t want to raise the bar too high. So let’s keep things a little less formal and a lot more inclusive.
Cletus had a great suggestion: “concours d’oppos. With hilarious judging.” I am so game for this!
Let’s not forget food. If we meet at a park, we could totally have a cookout. Mmm... burgers...

Even though I could bike to Metro Beach, I’d say a park on Hines Drive might be better since you don’t have to pay to drive in. and the only weekend I know of which will not work for me is April 28-30, since I will be in Dayton learning to drive one of these:

I still recommend Hines, if we can get there and camp out on a picnic spot (and no one has it reserved) there isn’t any cost or barrier of entry at all. It would probably be safer to spend $25 to lock in a picnic area that’ll come with access to grilles. If we wanted to scrape together around 100 bucks I’m a Wayne County resident so we could actually get a covered/sheltered area which will have grilles, and bathroom access nearby.
Hines is actually a really fun road to drive as well (as long as you can watch your speed, Wayne County Sheriff is all up and down Hines).
I fully recommend concours d’oppo! That sounds like a blast.

I’m excited for this! I’ll just say that I’d prefer a looser kind of event like a BBQ/car meet/hangout than a more organized thing like karting. Of course I only speak for one human but I’m excited regardless. Thanks for organizing this!

I’m going to keep pitching Belle Isle because it’d take a minute to get there.
But plenty of parking spaces and grills, like by this pavilion on the left and we could use either parking lot.

If you ever did get here, the Cabot Trail (road through the Cape Breton Highlands) is known as one of the best driving roads in the country - might be prime Datsun, Mustang or Corvette material.......minus the steep hills for ancient brakes! :P

Honestly, not sure - I have only been there twice and both were 15+ years ago (other end of the province from me, so I do NOT get there often), but I can still vividly remember some of the views...
one of our other fellow Oppos rode the route on his bike last year and loved it.
Think Rockies, but not as high up and you see the ocean instead of more mountains :P

towns up there except for at either end of the road (none along the way)...?

Well, depends on which end you start on, but if you start on the westernmost end, the Cabot Trail starts around the community of Baddeck, which is about 415km away from Mahone Bay...or about 4 hours and 20 minutes according to Google :P
