Kinja'd!!!

That’s the number to the Office of the Secretary of Education for the United States. The number does not ring.

I’m guessing she has a staff member who answers the phone; I’m not surprised you can’t reach the Secretary directly.

Regardless of who (if anyone) answers the phone, it should still ring.

I cannot reach the office directly. The phone rings once and that’s that. Same story with the deputy secretary’s office, the under secretary’s office, et cetera.

In fairness, the administration did just change and I’m sure things are a little chaotic in that office right now, but there’s not even a recorded greeting happening. Nothing at all.

Have you considered that calling so often is making the problem worse?

So I help fix the problem of them not answering the phone by me not calling them? Isn’t that sort of like emailing everyone to let them know that email is down?

I think the GSA IT people can diagnose the telephone system without input from citizens.

Not with some systems.

No one wants to talk to anyone anymore. So many companies try to divert you to a computer system or get you to email them so they can talk to you on their own time. They have a phone number, but it’s just for show.

Not in my experience, necessarily. Better phone slaves means more efficient government, at least under President Obama.

I blow up Congress’ phones all the time. Sometimes, the only way to stop them from tearing your rights away is to call them so much they can’t get anything done. :)

I suggested this to Xyl0 this morning, so I’ll suggest to you: how about a buffer image and buffer text “Politics Inside” as a nicety to any of our fellow Opponauts who come here to avoid politics?

I’ll try to do the same going forward, too.

I normally put “(Politics)“ in the headline, as recommended in the Oppo Handbook of Style. Then other Oppos tell me that putting a Politics warning is ridiculous if the thing concerns Trump, for example. I usually also put a picture of a Troll -- the Norwegian automobile from 1956 -- up top as well.

Folks can always keep scrolling, too; that’s my personal strategy. And Oppo is such a fast-running river that the half life of any post is only about 15 minutes and it’s unlikely that any given Oppo will see anything you post, particularly if they’re not following you.

I’ve gotten modded, too, for being overly provocative, or for failing to give a context to whatever I am posting. And I have been chastised by Oppos with whom I regularly communicate, and whom I respect, for being overly glib, and I have tried to curb that impulse as well.

If only sarcasm was easier to convey with simple text!

I was just trying to be fair to Xyl0 by suggesting the same to you that I suggested to her.

You’re right - with the firehose of OPPO, any one post is quickly gone and forgotten.
