My girlfriend is looking for a car. An Abarth 500 specifically. I was looking for used ones and was shocked at the prices. €10k for a 7 year old one when a brand new one costs €16k when you hand in a junker or €18.3k if you don’t? That’s some low depreciation!

What am I missing here?

From the German Abarth website:

Jeez, these things are cheaper in the US.

I was looking at them too, slow depreciation in the UK too. Went for a Golf GTI instead, I only wanted the abarth for the noise.

Huh. In the US, a new one is $21.5k, or you can buy a two year old one for less than two-thirds that (~$14k). There’s a 2013 one near me for $9k.

I just got an Abarth Cabrio, 2013, 47k miles, $11,000. ORiginal Sticker was $13,000.

That sucks. They depreciate badly in the US. Also, has the model seriously been around for 7 years?!

Well, in Norway an 8 year old Abarth 500 is €15k. I actually thought it would be more here.

For even more. The Fiat 500 (ignoring the classics) was introduced in Europe in 2007. That’s a decade ago already. Abarth came in 2008.

The US had to wait a few years I imagine.

Am I the only one seeing profit here? Buy in US, sell in europe?

It probably has to do with the fact that they remained basically unchanged for such a long time. Maybe Fiat dealers tried to keep the second hand prices high, to steer people towards buying a new car for slightly more money. Or maybe second hand car dealers tried to make a profit on them due to the fact that people hardly see any difference. Anyhow, that’s all just speculation.

Depending on the European market this can be done. You’d need to get rid of all the legacy units in the dash though. Some modifications of the lights and maybe a few other things and you can register them. My German father in law has a grey market import Magnum RT, which was never officially offered in Europe.

Wow this post is about literally the exact opposite of what I thought it would be! It’s the complete opposite in the US. 500s depreciate like a rock. Like somebody said, could be a decent business!

Another thing to consider is that all US “Abarths” are what would be Abarth Esseesse in Europe, with the stronger turbo engine (although a 5-spd manual?).

The Fiat 500 is so stale in the US, they didn’t even implement the exterior facelift that Europe got in 2015.

That didn’t make sense to me until I looked up where they’re produced. For Europe: Poland. For the US: Mexico. So different factories.

That’s probably the reason, but the fact that Fiat is willing to be this cheap with keeping their product line updated shows that they are not really committed to the North American market.

If you let your products go stale, and sales plummet while your competitors (Mini) remain steady, who are you going to blame?

I had heard about the steep depreciation in the US as well, being a frequent visitor of this website crowded by mostly Americans. I imagined it would depreciate steeply in Germany as well because Fiat is clearly not a German brand. I was proven wrong.

There are second hand examples online that cost more than what you can get new at a dealer with some haggling, it’s mind boggling. The M135i/M140i is similar, albeit in a higher price bracket, with dealers giving up to 20% off at the moment.

The abarth’s in the US have horrible resale. They retail for about $21k. I got a deal on mine and was out the door for around $18k. Two years later is was worth about $9-$10k.

Late to this party, but this is the exact opposite of what I expected to read. Very interesting. I bought my Abarth used, few years old with warranty left 10k miles loaded minus GPS cabriolet, it was a steal! I dig the used Fiat market
