Iowa state senator Mark Chelgren
wants to pass a bill
to require public university faculty disclose their political party, and then not hire anyone who gives one party 10% more representation than the other. His official bio listed a business degree that was actually a training certificate from a Sizzler franchise.

This is the look of a highly educated gentleman, if you ask me:

When confronted with the reality that “Forbco Management school” is not an accredited university,
Chelgren told the Des Moines Register that the school ran “ran Sizzler restaurants and a few other different restaurants.” He said he spent a few months in the training so that he could be promoted.
“I had to take their school and their classes and they gave me their degree — as they termed it — and I have used that terminology,” he told the newspaper. “I was told, ‘Well, it is probably better terminology to say ‘certificate,’” so regardless of however they want to do it, that is the semantics (NBC News is) arguing.”

I agree that this was foolish on his part, but citing his physical appearance/dress as evidence of his lack of intelligence is pretty shitty.

Even setting aside the unconstitutionality, we have more than two parties, and ~40% of voter are independents (i.e. a larger percentage than either Republicans or Democrats).
Also, I’d change my party affiliation to get a professorship, wouldn’t change my politics any.

The bill seeks to “require partisan balance” of the faculty members who work at institutions governed by the Iowa Board of Regents, according to its text. That means the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.
Under the bill, a candidate would not be hired as a professor or instructor if their political party affiliation on their hire date would “cause the percentage of the faculty belonging to one political party to exceed by ten percent the percentage of the faculty belonging to the other political party,” it states.
Each year, the state commissioner of elections would turn over voter registration records to the universities that are governed by the Board of Regents, the bill states.

And what about people who aren’t straight ticket voters? I know people who don’t declare a party affiliation, or who, even if they do, never vote straight ticket.
But this is bigger hogwash than potential staff who vote bipartisan... you’re never going to unmake the “liberalness” of academia by trying to force universities to hire conservatives. A Tea Party biology professor who doesn’t believe in evolution is simply not qualified to teach collegiate science classes. If this ridiculous bill were to pass all it would do is leave universities understaffed and leave students further underserved.

Man, so I could list a Chem E degree for my Sherwin Williams paint certifications from my college job. I’ll turn my tech certs into Computer Science degrees. My resume is looking better and better, to go along with my real M.E degree that I’ve never used in any M.E. capacity.

No lie: when I was a little kid, Sizzler was my favorite restaurant. My family had never been there and then randomly I was playing at a friend’s house and his parents took us there. I was like THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF FOOD HERE! TACO SALAD! FRIED CHICKEN! PASTA! DESSERT! THIS IS AWESOME! I dragged my parents there often, and they went along, even though looking back on it they probably were giving up on opportunities to go to decent restaurants in order to keep me happy. And then it burned down.
