That rounded hatch line really makes it look like a Ford Edge.

The point is you can never make enough toys for rich people to buy. Especially if the toy tells everyone how rich they are.

No, the Flex is a Taurus wagon. Well, until 2018, that is, when they take it out behind the shed and put a bullet in the boldest (non-Mustang) car they’ve made in 20 years.

I wonder if all the CUV confusion isn’t because we still see these as specialty vehicles and not mainstream.

CUVs are now mainstream, and the market is big enough to justify multiple entries with body style variations.

No one bats an eyelash when manufacturers sell fastback/liftback sedans alongside notchback sedans.

Same deal here, really.

Small than a regular Range, bigger than an Evoque, a just right size. An audi Q5 if you will, bigger than a Q3 and smaller than the Q7.

Range Rover Evoque = Jeep Compass

Range Rover Velar = Jeep Cherokee (but RWD based so can compete with Macan).

Range Rover Sport = Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Velar is mechanically similar to the Jaguar F-Pace. Think of it as an Evoque+.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - $37,365

Range Rover Evoque - $41,800

Land Rover Discovery - $49,990

Range Rover Velar - $49,990

The Discovery models are if you want “affordable” and roomy Land Rovers and are willing to give up the extra cachet of the Range Rover badge.

The smaller Range Rovers are for similar budgets, but people who don’t need the extra space and/or are more concerned with the full-on Range Rover name and style.

I believe by using the Velar name it’s meant to hark back to the early days of Range Rover in that early Range Rovers were quite publicly tested but wore Velar badges on the front.

Kinja'd!!!

The Range Rover was originally aimed as a farm vehicle for working around the farm taking hay and cattle to towing horse boxes on the road, to taking produce to the market, then hosing it down at the end of the day and taking the family to church on the Sunday.

It excelled at everything it did from farm work to weekend hill climbs etc... and was a great marketing scheme in that when it got put on the market, people who questioned what it was or where it fitted in with Land Rover could be shown it’s pre-release credentials.

Though it soon got ‘gentrified’ buy land owners and later a symbol of wealth and affluence.

By re-introducing the Velar name I believe they are trying to hark back to earlier days of the brand.

It’s priced and marketed quite a way down the pricelist to encourage new Range Rover ownership.

The point of it is that people will buy it. I’ve seen a lot of people on the FP freaking out about WHAT MARKET SEGMENT IS IT SUPPOSED TO FILL and I’m just like who cares?
