Things that could also help: not dropping by for 20-minute chats about how to get more stuff done. Etc.

Extend this from “software” to everything from sales drawings to part design, and I know that feel.

“We need to completely upgrade our systems and processes”; “We can’t spend any money on IT”. PICK ONE GODDAMMIT

Hi! I’m a construction company that makes money on line-item estimate contracts. How? By using small mom & pop type contractors, that generally have lower costs and perform quality work. Only problem is I expect these small 2-person operations to have the corporate paperwork of a $50M company, and then I get frustrated when I find out a 5-person tile company doesn’t have a 100-page corporate safety plan.

I WISH bosses would be willing to spring for new systems. It’s usually more micro management.

Oh, he does that too... or at least or our industry equivalent.

Also something that gets thrown in the mix is when someone* makes one mistake he tries to do that task himself a good chunk of the time after that. Which leads to him overworking himself, which leads to him making the same or worse mistakes, which leads to “blame the tools” and right back to “research furiously”.

*not restricted to me. I don’t feel at all singled out, this is just what he does.

This is a family business. Jointly run by father and son--the best type!! They’re both tightwads, but one thinks software is the be-all and end-all and the other thinks like a Bop-It (do it the same, but better). In other words... ah never mind

In my experience, family-owned businesses run in 1 of 2 ways, depending on the family - with nothing in between. Either the family is a bunch of selfish monsters who value employees less than machines, or the family views their employees as extensions of their own family and are great people to work for. For what it’s worth, I work for a big company, and your doom loop applies just as well here, too.

This guy is a quivering lump of paranoia. Something goes wrong, the responsible party gets to hear about it--rightly so. But then, he says he doesn’t have confidence in “task x” anymore and it’s affecting his ability to close sales (small company. Owner is also sales rep) and takes on the task himself. He then goes through the same mistake, and devises an elaborate system to prevent it in future that involves (though he doesn’t ever realize it) cutting efficiency roughly in half. Thankfully they rarely get put in place, at least not without serious modification. Generally speaking it doesn’t matter anyway, as after something happens you know what to watch out for the next time.

The thing is, he’s:

- Useless with tech

- Despite being useless with tech, is obsessed with tech

- A tightwad who doesn’t really want to spend anything on tech and vastly underestimates the cost of said tech (For example: this guy once spent 2 days on the phone trying to get the best possible deal on a set of USED snow tires.)

I mean, he’s actually a decent guy at the end of it all... but he’s pretty high-strung a lot of the time and we clearly have two different ideas of what constitutes “common sense”.

I’m in a weird situation here (gonna so deeper. Prepare for repetition) that feels a lot like that middle ground spot you said didn’t exist :). There’s a father and two sons. Father is actually my uncle, so it’s a comfortable place in that regard. Joint ownership between father/1 son. All 3 are tightwads, but they all have different things that they consider worth spending on. They’re all hair-triggered. Chill chill chill SHITONTHEFAN chill (or of course sometimes inverted). Feels a lot like “Too many chiefs and not enough Indians” sometimes. They try to treat everyone great. They also will pull a 180 on that in a heartbeat sometimes.

All in all it’s an ok place but some things get to you and sometimes you gotta vent.

Cost is usually what ends up killing all proposed IT projects. Ironically though the longer they put it off the more expensive it gets to replace.

Most management types outside of IT are garbage with IT. Our former CIO was useless.

Years ago, a co-worker described it perfectly to me. Every company is crazy and does dumb things - you just need to figure out if the company is the sort of crazy that you can live with, or not. Sounds like it’s the type of crazy you can live with, but that doesn’t preclude the need to vent once in a while—

Substitute “college girlfriend” for company and that sounds like a discussion I had with my dad years ago

Hahaha - - As I was typing it, I realized that you could easily make that substitution and it would still apply...
