What kind of organization? I keep things pretty old school when it comes to work. Lots of handwritten stuff

Organization like things in your home or office. Part of the purpose of this interview step is to try and develop a better understanding of where a product or service could be useful.

Keeping things old school is exactly the kind of thing I’d love to talk about. I suppose we could go back and forth on Kinja, but it’d probably be easiest to instant message via Facebook, Google Hangouts, or Discord if you have it. Let me know what you’d prefer, shouldn’t take more than a few minutes of your time. I appreciate it!

I’m only organized at work because I have the do it now or not at all system sort of system. I get sales tasks or quotes done in order and then discard any notes on it. If it sounds like the customer is just stroking me for info I throw out the info right then and they need to rehash the information if they call back . Legit customer price quotes are put on a computer and all paper hits the trash can. I have a clear mind when I go home because nothing hangs over my head except the occasional couple of deliveries for the next day that sit beside my work station. All of my other sales for each day are incoming items that just need the computer orders printed. Simple and it eliminates any stress from having worries about what I need to do the next day.

Why are you concerned with eliminating stress before heading home, perhaps even at the expense of feeling pressured during the day to get things done?

When space is limited, and drawers, boxes, or shelves have to contain different kinds of items, try to find a “theme” that makes sense to store things together.

For example, separate PARTS from MATERIALS. If you have a spare headlamp housing, serpentine belt, spark plugs, and leftover stock intake from a Trick Flow upgrade, put all that stuff together on your “PARTS” shelf. Gather raw “MATERIALS” like lumber, sheet metal, tubing, hose, etc. and put them somewhere else.

For tools, gather together items that have a similar purpose. Tools that are for “SHAPING” material (things that cut, file, drill, etc.) can all go in the same drawer. You can also dedicate a drawer for “FORCE” tools (hammers, punches, prybars, etc.). Put gloves, safety glasses, respirators, & first aid kit all together in a “PPE” cabinet. You can even organize liquids by purpose: lubricants on one end of the shelf, cleaners on the other, adhesives over here, coatings over there... you get the idea.

Do you label these drawers and containers, or are you just aware of where things belong? And do you use this sorting method for other things, such as kitchen utensils?

Stress isn’t good for your health so its best eliminated and I have no issues getting things done each day. I’ve learned you need to live as stress free as possible. As long as you have a decent job and can pay your bills you’re golden. If a customer is pressuring me on getting an order from GM quicker than normal I put the pressure and expense back on them. They can pay overnight fees if they or their customer are in a rush. Their lack of planning doesn’t constitute an emergency on my part. As a rule most people procrastinate and its not my fault that they decide to try and get something repaired the day before they are going on a trip. They’ve usually known about the issue for weeks or months in advance.

My philosophy is my own car runs just fine. I get in my car and head home for a peaceful evening each night. The lack of stress is why I’m in my 60s but look and act 10-15 years younger. Many of my family have lived life in much the same way and lived to their late 80-90s with two even going over 100.

I don’t label the drawers myself, but it’s not a bad idea, especially if you’re not the only one who’s going to be using them. And yes, themes can be applied to the kitchen or office... anywhere, really. You just have to be creative about deciding what the major themes should be.

A spice rack can be organized by separating flavors that are primarily for “sweet” or “salty” foods. Maybe put measuring cups, measuring spoons, and thermometers together, and collect the knife sharpener, bread knife, and pizza cutter somewhere else.

So maybe when you’re looking for something, it will be right next to a bunch of similar items that might catch your eye and change your mind about what’s the best tool for the job. Maybe you’ll reach for some paperclips, and decide that binder clips would actually work much better.

I agree that it would be a good method, but it doesn’t sound like it’s one you personally employ outside of the garage. Why the distinction between tools and materials and things like a spice rack?

Kinja'd!!! "Jayhawk Jake" (jayhawkjake)
03/02/2017 at 23:27, STARS: 0

That’s great, and I definitely agree that it’s important to separate stress from work and life. When you’re at home do you have a similar attitude of organizing to get things done, or are you more laid back about it?

Tools, spices, materials... I’m just using those as examples of how to come up with broad themes.

Truth is, I’m not a very organized person by nature. My clutter has caused me so much grief in the garage that that just happens to be where I’ve made the most progress. Other areas (bathroom, kitchen, etc.) still need a lot of attention, and I’m sure that if I just got motivated, I could use the same principle and come up with some kind of themes to sort it all out.

More laid back at home and have only one weekly routine which is for me doing a small weekly grocery trip . Wife does a major trip once a month. We keep a couple list on the fridge for items we need to buy, tasks, car stuff or household jobs that need done. We put everything like appointments and GTGs on a calendar and you can always refer to it for what you have to do that week. I usually look on Sunday nights to see whats up each week. It clears the mind of not having to remember every single thing that’s coming up over the month. Organized but far from OCD. Only my garage is always a mess and I fully clean it once a year.

I’m trying to gather your experiences specifically, not necessarily broad ideas. It sounds like you’re aware of the state of your organization, but it takes a certain level of motivation to act on it. Why do you think that is? Are you truly more frustrated by clutter in the garage, or was it just simpler to manage than other areas?

Kinja'd!!! "Jayhawk Jake" (jayhawkjake)
03/03/2017 at 09:59, STARS: 0

This list of items you keep on the fridge, how often to you add to it, and what motivates you to add items to the list? Does it come from planning ahead or a realization that you are missing something you need?

Some other questions I have regarding your shopping trip and calendar, how often do you feel you have forgotten something? In other words, when you go shopping do you only buy items on the list or do you often find other items you need or want that weren’t on the list? Same thought for the calendar, do you generally stick to the calendar or do you occasionally have a commitment that for some reason didn’t make the calendar?

Ah, ok. In that case, I can only speak from experience in terms of the success I’ve had in the garage.

I’ve never really thought about why I get more motivated out there. Maybe it has something to do with the expense of the tools, and my reluctance to buy something that I KNOW I have somewhere. Losing a 10mm socket sure would piss me off, and fishing around in a messy drawer for that size is maddening.

Or maybe it’s something else. Maybe being as professional as I can when wrenching is a stronger aspiration than I thought, and organizing tools is part of that. I dunno. It sure is satisfying.

The fridge list is staples we are out of or that are getting low. Sometimes wife has a new recipe that needs ingredients. Yes we buy other than on the list. The other list is things like two 2x4x 12ft treated lumber or a couple of light bulbs that burned out. Calendar items are appointments, work schedules, vacation. We seldom miss adding an item, its become routine.

Whenever mostly. I own/run my own business so unless I’m busy/distracted I can generally talk. Friday night is “date night” and Sunday afternoon I’m going to Monster Jam but otherwise I should be pretty available
