When will your Big Data report be accessible like your credit report?

Kinja'd!!!

The Amazon outage got me thinking. If they see a third of all internet traffic, they probably are tracking it and have a pretty good file built up for most users. When will I be able to see what they have on me?

It’s kinda like grocery store discount cards. At the one I use frequently, the coupon printer “knows” when I need something, such as garbage bags or a toothbrush or paper towels. Because they track my shopping habits, they know if I’m due or overdue for something, and print a coupon out. Sometimes it’s for a different brand than usual to encourage switching.

The information in your credit report is available for no charge to the consumer from the major bureaus that track it, once per year. Any time a 3rd party wants to access it, they must pay a fee. I’m fine with this system. The information in your Big Data report should also be freely available to the consumer using the same logic. I don’t mind that the supermarket is selling my file to the highest bidder in the toothbrush industry to print coupons when I’m due for a toothbrush. I don’t mind that multiple places have a file on me. I just want to know what exactly they’ve got.

When someone decides it should no longer be a secret to you. There are tons of private databases out there on every one of us.

One could argue, though, that most of the data is not “officially” attached to you. CBRs are based on SSNs, which get directly used when credit is obtained. It would be (slightly) more difficult and (slightly) more nebulous to use a Big Data report in the same way, since it’s connected to a more generic, less verified set of data points.

This, lots of data is user identifiable stripped.

It’s far less than the total they’ve collected but, Google will show various things. Their Ad Settings page will show the topics they believe you are in, as well as their guess at your age and gender.

Obviously, beyond the obvious search and browsing histories, Google Maps’ timeline feature will show you years of location tracking data, which is both very cool, and pretty creepy. It will even take a guess at which transit method you used to get where you were going.

As someone who works with Big Data...never. really. It’s collected and becomes private. Oh, I’m sure there will be companies eventually who may aggregate public and private sources but it will be a limited picture.

It’s not your data that is at all interesting. It’s how it can be combined to make predictive analysis of people like you.
