Kinja'd!!!

When you realize you no longer like your job. I have been at the same job for a little over 4 years now. While I have gotten a raise and title change and a new position about halfway through that time, I am now at a point I can’t really go higher. Plus there has been more and more work with out any more reward. This has been especially true the last 6 months and on top of that I am the only one in the department that works 6 days a week and I don’t really make any more money off of it.

Money may be a little bit of a factor in this, but really I just am not happy anymore. I dread going to work. I lay in bed till the last possible moment before having to get up to shower. And I may have a good morning, but then work happens and I am immediately in a foul mood. I can’t shake it.

So I guess it is time to look for new work :(

Welcome to the New Economy™, where managers reward shareholders by getting as few employees as possible to do as much work as possible. That works for them, but not for you.

I would suggest you start looking for a new job. Even if you have to take a cut in pay to do something that you don’t dread.

I’m not at “ESCAPE!” level irritation or even discomfort with my job, but I have had a couple weeks lately that have been too Kafka for comfort. “Produce bricks without straw” kind of things. I also have no particular joy in what I’m doing most of the time and don’t have any upward routes to follow, but I see that as the cost of doing business for a while longer...

That’s exactly why I left my last company. They were a great upstart company that I worked at for 7+ years that got bought by a major company who promptly started to corporate-ize it. After a year or two of their own people being in charge of our company, we lost nearly all the rights we had before to handle clients as well as our benefits and perks being thrown out the window.

I can empathize with you. I’ve been at my job just over 3.5 years, I’ve hit the ceiling and I also hate it. Same thing...even when I go to work in a good mood it does not last long.

My last two jobs were nightmare situations, and this job is far from it. Honestly if I were ok with being lazy I could stay here forever. However, I like to hustle and that ain’t happening here.

Have you made any attempts to change things at your current job? If not, start there. If you have, and things haven’t changed, then plan to GTFO and don’t look back.

Personally I have stayed too long at a job that I hated before. It’s just not worth it.

I have talked to my boss about not working Saturdays or getting Mondays off, but that doesn’t seem to work either way. Talk about raises just doesn’t go anywhere. So i am looking around, just hard to find good stuff in this town. I need at the very least what I am making now just to scrape by.

But my fingers are crossed and I have started planning. Just need to get everything lined up. Today’s been particularly stressful, so I needed to vent.

Me too. We have reviews later this month and I plan on showing up with stats that show the increased workload vs the pay increases. I feel I might have been guilted into excess work by the cost of living raise they gave our office (I am finally comfortable enough that money is no longer stressful) but an adjustment to keeping an office in an expensive town to save money on flights and fewer overnight trips shouldn’t result in a workload increase. It’s not my fault this isn’t a cheap place to live.

Well, screw ‘em then. Do enough to not get fired and focus your efforts on finding something better. Also, when you do inevitably quit, don’t even give them the option to make a counter offer.

Yeah. It is knowing there really isn’t anywhere else to go really sucks. My job is far from a nightmare. My direct coworkers are great, but getting paid far below the other guy that I have more hours and more responsibilities than just because he has been here longer blows. I have to hustle, but not the good kind. It is more like everything little at once and you still feel like nothing is done. It is just unfulfilling. The last time I have felt something fulfilling was the last couple of projects in the back reorganizing. Otherwise I have no motivation.

Companies operate on three different types of policy. Customers first, shareholders first, and employees first.

Most big companies are shareholders first. All they care about are profit margins. Yes, businesses aren’t in business to make shoes, tvs, or whatever, they are in business to make money. However, a shareholder first philosophy leads to neglecting product quality and employee treatment that leads to your company making a shitty product. These companies (like CaptDale’s) sometimes end up run by incompetents who only understand how to make a profit by cost cutting. This runs employees ragged, and causes talented people and hardworkers to seek jobs elsewhere. As such, it only increases short term profits. As those profits decline, companies grow addicted and continue effectively cannibalizing themselves until all their good employees and customers have left, and they are ruined by some scandal.

customer first is better, but it makes employees feel unappreciated since oftentimes difficult customers are given priority over them.

Employee first is the strategy that my school is teaching. Employees are responsible not only for the creation of a product/service, but also for the sales of said product/service. They are the most important part of an organization. The way to attract good employees is with good policies and competitive wages. Adequate staffing is but a small part. A good employee first company will see increases in productivity, quality of work, and innovation.

Aaaaand thats your business textbook for today.

I tweeted this right after I got a text after work hours from the boss. He was complaining that something that I didn’t put back on the schedule was going to get him cussed out by a sales manager at a car dealer. That was like the exact wrong way to motivate me to pay attention.

I recently went through just what you’re going through. I was laid off from a specialty position in the airline industry back in 2010, and after searching for a couple of years for something, anything, I actually found a position in my area of expertise. Rather reluctantly I moved from Southern California, the place of my birth and my home for decades, to the Midwest, not knowing exactly what to expect.

As it turned out, the job was not what I had expected and didn’t really utilize my training and experience, and it had morphed into something I really didn’t give a damn about. With all of my contacts 1,800 miles away, it was a little difficult to just move into another position locally. My motivation suffered, and despite working nights and weekends just to keep up, I really couldn’t stand it any longer. I was especially pissed when I was disciplined for calling off the day of a projection review meeting; I had taken a friend and co-worker to the ER the night before when he and his wife became violently ill and didn’t get home until nearly 5 in the morning; needless to say that I really didn’t have the energy to go in to the office that day and figured that my superiors would be sympathetic. Nope. And the person I took to the ER? He didn’t get in any trouble for taking a few days off and missing the same meeting...

I had been looking for other work, although not as intensely as was warranted given my loathing of that job and that company. Eventually the company had to downsize after a major customer was involved in a merger and we lost a number of contracts; they bet heavily on this customer when they went into bankruptcy, so this outcome really wasn’t much of a surprise. I was let go in the first round even though I was higher in seniority than some of the others in my department, but it was probably the best thing for both the company and myself. I didn’t want to be there and they didn’t want me there, so I welcomed the layoff despite the uncertainty it brought.

I did search for work for months and months, and was really at the end of my rope when I agreed to pack up and move back to CA and stay with my folks until I could find work and move out. I had agreed to take with me only what would fit in my car, and being quite the packrat that was going to prove to be a challenge. At that point I was quite pleased to have purchased a Mazda5 instead of a Mazda MX-5! I finished up the phone call with the folks and went back to my computer (I was at the library since I no longer had Internet access at home), and was surprised to see a response to one of my many job applications inviting me in for an interview. I did have a few interviews prior to this moment, however I didn’t get the jobs for which I had interviewed.

I did the skills tests and had a few interviews and then didn’t hear anything for a while. I finally called them up to basically ask WTF was going on, and was told that I got the job. I’ve been there 10 months now and couldn’t be happier. I’m making more money, I get paid overtime despite being salaried, my commute dropped from 19 miles each way to 2, the benefits are amazing, management is helpful and supportive and my co-workers are great. I can see myself working here until I retire; unlike many places I’ve worked, the turnover is low, and they do a good job of weeding out the troublesome employees.

I guess it helps that we are providing a service mandated by law and aren’t being driven solely by the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Yes, we do have to watch our expenses and can be quite cheap, but it’s not only about the money. I could probably make more elsewhere, but I don’t think I could be any happier than I am right now. I’ve had jobs with 6-figure incomes and found that I was miserable in those positions. I’ll take happiness over money every single day of the week.

Hang in there. Whether you leave on your own accord or not, the stars may align, like they did for me, and you will soon find yourself in a better place. I am living proof that it can happen.
