My definition of "three catastrophic" auto accidents...

Kinja'd!!!

... Would have to involve deaths, missing limbs, blindness, or paralysis. You know, something “catastrophic.”

Totalling your car: not catastrophic.

Fender bender: not catastrophic.

Some broken bones or neck injury: still not catastrophic.

If someone survived *three* catastrophic accidents ultimately unharmed outside of mild PTSD, and was still driving today, I would assume they were immortal.

id argue the car getting totaled is catastrophic.

this is pretty castrophic, but IIRC the person walked away with a sprained wrist essentially

Totaling a car can be pretty catastrophic if you’re driving it. And I don’t me writing off a $2000 PT Cruiser by doing $1100 of damage in a fender bender.

Catastrophic accidents may have totaled cars, but not all accidents that total cars are catastrophic. Example: I was rear-ended 11 years ago. Totalled even though it was still drivable, no injuries, etc.

I always thought it meant catastrophic for the car rather than the driver. So when a car gets damaged beyond repair or written off it is catastrophic.

I think it depends on the person. I totaled my Mazda when I was in high school with a friend in the passengers seat. I was thankful no one was hurt and upset that my car was gone, but that was it.

My buddy on the other hand is scarred by the incident. Wrote his senior thesis about it haha...

I assumed the writer was writing from a humanistic standpoint. As she hated driving *because* she had been in catastrophic collisions. Would hate driving just because you got your car totalled? Hell no, you’d get another car. I assume catastrophic as used here means “big” or “bad” or traumatic.

I’ve had my Integra and my Civic totalled, both worth much more than your supposition of my current vehicles.

There’s certainly a bit of embellishment going on via the use of “catastrophic”. Granted, she did get a collapsed lung from one accident, and a partial colon removal from a second, so they were more substantial than your run of the mill fender bender.

It threw me off when she mentioned getting rid of her “beloved” Accord. Seemed a bit odd to have a beloved vehicle when you hate driving.

Also, why ditch the Accord if you loved it? FWD will do fine in Minnesota winters, save for the odd catastrophic (see what I did there) blizzard. Numerous friends of mine lived through St. Paul/Minneapolis winters in FWD econoboxes, and my family and I made it through dozens of Maine winters sans 4wd.

I think she wants an M-RAP with heated seats...

I can understand calling 12 inches of colon removed, and very nearly getting paralyzed after being thrown from the car as catastrophic. The lung collapse, eh. My friend has had that happen three times simply because he’s tall.

In her defense, a collapsed lung and having a foot of your intestines removed does sound pretty bad.

Errm, I can kind of see both sides. The person feels significantly affected by them, I suspect in a probably compounding way (by the description, seems to me the 3rd one probably would have been NBD if not for the 1st and 2nd)...call this the “they’re catastrophic to MEEEE, dammit” theory. On the other hand, the 3rd accident can hardly be classified as catastrophic, IMHO. The others...well, that depends on your perspective. But, it also seems to me that this person likely has some things to be working on and not just be settled with being scarred by driving. Perhaps she is, and she has no obligation to share that in the format of the article. I see your side, but can see her side a little too.

I get what you mean, I guess I didn’t really read it that way. On a related note, I find these “What Car Should You Buy” bits pretty awful in general. I get what they are trying to do, but it seems like most of them would be best solved with “Nothing” or “Camry”. All it really does is give the FP staff a chance to tell people that all you really need is a decrepit old Volvo/Jeep/Beetle/E30 for all life situations.

Yeah I didn’t understand that.

You loved your Accord, but you hated driving it, and you sold it so you can buy a new car to drive even though you hate driving?

If you hate driving and are that scared, why would you keep driving? Get a friend that doesn’t mind giving you a ride, or carpool to work, or take public transport.

I work in insurance and have seen some stuff I would call “Catastrophic” even though there were no major injuries.

The one that springs to mind was a file where the person had 2 days of hotel stays despite the accident having happened only about 100 miles from their home in Texas. When doing the audit I asked the adjuster why the hotel stay. She said it was because they needed that time to be able to deal with the idea of being behind the wheel after the accident and sent me the on-scene photos of the car. It was Jellybean (96+ Ford Taurus that had been rear-ended so hard there was literally no car behind the front seats. Everything between the rear bumper & the back of the rear seats had been compacted into a mass of metal less than a foot deep.

The driver and passenger were unharmed physically , but were understandably shaken after having all of the car behind them functionally cease to exist.

I kinda have to agree that catastrophic needs to involve some bodily injury that needs serious medical treatment and rehab, but my personal experience has colored my view.
