As I often mention on Oppo, I live in Madison, WI and grew up in the DC suburbs. Every so often, I see people sporting Washington Nationals script ‘W’ logo hats, stickers, etc. I can’t help but think these people are not my fellow DC natives and instead think the ‘W’ is a University of Wisconsin logo. It’s not.
This is the University of Wisconsin’s current “motion W” logo:
In the entire history of University of Wisconsin logos , there has never been a logo with the same script W as the Washington Nationals’ logo. Apparently from 1961 to 1969, UW used this wordmark :
But that’s not the same W as the Nationals, and it wasn’t the main UW logo at the time.
Now, it’s entirely possible that some of these folks sporting Nationals logos are in fact from DC, or Nationals fans for some other reason. But I see the Nationals logo a little too often for that to be the case all the time.
In fact, I once owned a Nationals script W baseball cap, as a subtle way to rep my hometown while also flying under the radar in Madison, since it’s both red and a W and maybe people would think it was something to do with the University of Wisconsin. But I stopped wearing it because the total amount of attention I’ve paid to baseball in the last 20 years is less than the amount of time I’ve spent typing this post.
Bonus: someone actually bought a VW Jetta Hybrid!

Knowing how avid Badgers fans are, I can’t conceivably believe that they would think it’s a Wisconsin logo. Stranger things have happened, though.
Strangely, I see quite a few Nats fans in CO as well, judging by the amount of baseball caps I see. So many poor displaced Expos fans (I was one, never latched on to a new team.)

Oh I know. :) Just for whatever reason when I first saw the picture I was like “who put a Walgreen’s logo on their car?”
TBH, I do see a lot of curly “W”s in Wisconsin, I’m just as curious as you if people know what it actually is.

When I first moved to Wisconsin I had a annoying kid in gym class ask if I was from Maine why did I always wear a Brewers’ hat. The hat I was wearing was a blue cap with a red B. The funny thing is this kid was a jock, so he really should have known sports stuff.

Interestingly, Walgreens sued Wegmans a few years ago. As I recall, the case settled with Wegmans agreeing not to use its script W logo on a standalone basis.

More annoying is the sticker in the window. No, not the content of the sticker or even the fact that it’s just taped to the inside. That makes sense, especially when dealing with such a polarizing subject as this past election. (to avoid having it torn off by some asshat) No, the thing that irks me is HOW they taped it. Why would you not tape every corner? Of COURSE it’s going to get droopy if you just use one vertical strip. It’s so simple, goddammit.

I’m quite certain that’s happened frequently. Or they work at Walgreens and don’t have company swag to wear so they substitute hoping some car guy with OCD won’t notice the minutiae in serif fonts.

What’s funny is in my neck of the woods we have a private school called West-something that uses the stylized “W” that Wisconsin does. When I first got here, I thought there were a lot of Wisconsin transplants, but then I finally scoped the local private school’s logo.

you know, I thought that kinda looked like the walgreen’s W at first. that’s a fresh looking jetta btw, only because of the LEDs and editing
