$1100 in parts for the buzzsaw.

Full maintenance list acquired, meaning: brake pads, oil/air filter, chain/gears, coolant/oil/brake fluid, tires, spark plugs

Kinja'd!!!

let me give you a piece of advice Oppo. When buying a motorcycle, please check the aftermarket support. what should have been a simple $35 CAD rear sprocket was $150 USD shipped, as my dad didn’t want the OEM gearing and I had to order one custom made. the front gear? Only one place in the US sells it. $35 for the gear, $45 for shipping -.-’

Actually skip the paramedic, just call the mortician

Holy crap. How often do you need to do maintenance like this on a bike?

What’s the big cost item? Tires?

tires and chain/sprockets. about 400 each.

tires are about 1.5 sets a year if you ride a lot (2 rears x 250 each, 1 front at 150. these are probably the best tires you can buy though)

chain is about $120. pending on how you maintain it, once every 2-5 years.

the oddball stuff here was the gears. for my SV, I can get chain, front and rear sprocket for 250 all in. for this bike, because my dad wanted to go to a non-OEM gear ratio and the parts are hard to find to begin with, it was 200 CAD for a custom rear and 100 for the front (with shipping...part was 35US, 45 US shipping)

A friend has a Ducati, she put about $1000 into it for scheduled maintenance last spring, and while it was in they shop noticed more valve noise than they liked. Some testing showed low oil pressure, so it needs the engine pulled out & apart so the oil pump can be replaced. She has had it sitting in the garage since, as she’s not yet ready for that particular bill.

yea....labour for a duc is not what anyone would call cheap.

whats annoying is that this $1100 is just the parts and what not. I still need to do the work myself... At least i can do most of it myself, might need to buy a chain tool finally.

I could get like, 100 mini ones.

or 2 full sized ones that dont work

or 1 full sized that works.

Empty wallet signs and fun signs are pretty similar, IIRC.

I was looking at bikes and while at the BMW dealership, I saw a screamer of a deal on an F700GS. Decently equipped, it was a tick under 9000$ OTD. HOWEVER.....I know that something like this would probably be my own doom.

Oh and I bought a 2015 KLR on tuesday. I pick it up either sunday or monday. Pics and review will follow. Just figured you’d enjoy the news :)

honestly, the only reason this came up now is because my dad keep deferring maintenance. given that I haven’t done ANYTHING else to it other then tires (seriously, not even brake pads) in 50K km, id say its a pretty good deal.

Ooooooh, I see now. So this was multiple maintenance deferrals all catching up? Not as bad as it could be outside of the shipping issues then.

yea. given that the factory brake pads and chain have lasted 50K km, its really not that bad at all.

this is really the first bit of maintenance I’ve ever done to the bike outside of oil and tire changes.

If they’re pulling the motor to replace the oil pump, your friend is getting taken.... Ducati oil pumps are accessed from the right side cover... zero need to remove the engine..................

Edited to add, Pixel, you should go help her, a pump is like $50 bucks and maybe an hour or two to swap it out......

Aaaaaaahhhh. Well the BMW was still out of my purchase price range by several grand but good to know I should keep my eyes open for those parallel twins in the future. As a street bike I think I wouldn’t mind an F700/F800 (non GS) for commuting/road riding. I certainly fit on them quite nicely and insurance wasn’t awful either.

I may be getting the details of what it needs wrong, the conversation happened last spring. I’ll probably follow up once the weather improves. Now that I have a bike again I need riding buddies.
