I just spent two days being ferried around in my friend’s Tribeca. I believe this is the first time I’ve ever been in a Subaru. So, here are my thoroughly incomplete impressions.

It’s a car

I rode shotgun through some city driving in good weather. It was AWD, but that didn’t make an appearance under these conditions. It rode well and seemed to corner without much body roll. Nothing special, as you might expect.

The interior

The   seats were tan leather with a two tone tan and brownish dash. Very tasteful. For a ten year old car that sees Nebraska winters, I have to say he keeps it surprisingly immaculate. The thing was almost show room ready, with not even a scratch on the cheap metallic trim paint.

The center console was kinda weird looking. At first I thought “over styled “, but I grew to appreciate it. Controls were big, obvious, and easy to operate with minimal attention. The stereo was good. No nav, but a decent sized display, albeit dot matrix in form.

One thing I liked were the little temp displays inside of the dual side temp control wheels. You don’t usually see that in cars at this price range. Also, the heater was ace seats were very comfortable I’m sure I could do a long road trip in this car

Cargo capacity

An SUV needs to carry stuff, and this one was able to handle my wheelchair in the back without having to disassemble it. So, score one there.

All in all, a decent, relatively anonymous CUV. It got me where I needed to go. That’s all I got.

Right? I kinda had an urge to slide some Ace of Base into the CD. Or maybe some Indigo Girls?

The temperature dials with the little screens in them are my favourite part of the Tribeca.

It does look like it was very well cared for.

That’s also a side benefit of hard plastic interiors. They wear much better than all the soft touch stuff. But everyone hates hard interiors.

Subaru’s have abnormally durable interiors for the cost of the car. My previous Impreza was 11 years old had >100k miles and when I cleaned it up it looks close to show room. My uncle steve had bought a VW new beetle at the same time as I bought my Impreza and his car looked trashed after 5 years, and it wasn’t that he didn’t take care of it.

Well that’s. mark of quality but also of a good owner. Any interior can be trashed if you aren’t careful.

Subaru interiors never seem to wear. My family has owned a 2001 Outback since about 2009 when it had ~30k mi. It has survived a family of 4 with 2 dogs, 2 kids driving it through high school and all the pilling friends into it that entails (fyi, wagons make great high school cars), and 16 New England winters and the only visible wear to the interior is that the carpet under the pedals has been flattened by driver shoes and the black staining on the headliner above the driver from the old lady who owned it before us’s hair coloring.
