It was either a problem with the navigation software, or the mission planning software, or it could be some interference caused a lost link. Though why it didn’t go into loiter mode, I don’t know. It’s mysterious but it’s not as out of the ordinary as they’re making you think.

The Army doesn’t use MQ-9's. They will be using the MQ-1C Sky Warrior though.

The whole Skynet thing is hilarious, and completely implausible. There is no ‘AI’ software in UAV’s. They can take off and land themselves. You can plan missions, set waypoints, and that’s about it. They’re not going to ‘reprogram’ themselves and ‘become sentient’ or whatever.

I’d know, because I write software for UAV’s..

Before you launch a UAV you have to upload it an “emergency” mission, that tells it to return home if it loses link.

Someone didn’t do that, so it continued on the last command given before it lost link until it ran out of gas.
