Stopped by a place that sells things, and I saw a thing:

Kinja'd!!!

Before you get too excited, it’s not a TRD pro trim. This is a (IIRC, it was late) TRD Sport or TRD Off Road Tacoma, optioned up to a $39.7k MSRP with fancy bits. The vinyl decals, TRD Pro front Grille, and TRD beadlock style wheels with BFG AT KO2 tires were dealer installed options and part of a $6k package.

MSRP on the wheels is somewhere around $250/ea, 265/70r16 BFG tires are somewhere around $200-220/ea, and TRD Pro Taco grilles MSRP somewhere around $400. There was a little faux-rollbar thing in the back that attached to the aluminum L-track bed rails, no details on that.

Kinja'd!!!

Stock tire size, no lift, and some (spiffy?) vinyls makes for a $46k Toyota Tacoma. Toyota’s factory decal game was on point in the late 70's and 80's. I wish they’d bring it back and I like the reference, but vinyl stickies does not an awesome truck make.

As a friend pointed out, that’s two Miatas.

Wheels/tires, let’s be nice and say $2k. Light bar...$200. Pro grill, $300. Those are some expensive vinyl stickers...

There is about 10 inches of dead space between the front plastic grille and the actual radiator.

Plus camera adds 10lbs.

$6,000 - Wheels($1000) - Tires ($800) - Grille ($400) - “Light Bar” ($200?) = $3600 for your vinyl stickies.

I would like it but it’s kinda badly executed.

They’re trying to emulate trucks like my (now former) ‘72 Ford where, when working on the front of the engine, I stood in the engine bay to drill and tap out a stripped bolt on the water pump. The radiator was out, but still. There was room for me to stand in there and work with a freaking drill.

If only the gap between the grille and radiator were big enough to stand in. Maybe it should be... bigger?

Everyone says the camera adds 10lbs. Don’t ask how science works.

In thinking about how to decorate the Jetta ute, I remembered this:

Kinja'd!!!

Then remembered this:

Kinja'd!!!

I’m going to get and adapt the Comanche stripes for the Mk4 Jetta ute. It’ll look like VW continued making the truck/Caddy and just updated the existing graphics. It’ll also be a nod to my failed project from last winter, an actual Jeep Comanche.

Awwwwyeah. OEM vinyl graphics should make a comeback. Not the brotruck ones, but the old school ones:

Ok, Land Cruiser vinyls aren’t factory.

I mean why so much space.

Though 10lbs for a camera does seem excessive too...

Yes, I kid, I kid.

Seemingly the trend for most auto manufacturers is to add volume to their vehicles. Just about every car, save for the Miata maybe, has grown significantly with every gen. Bulky trucks seem to sell, and it’s beyond me. Maybe it also has something to do with fuel economy regulations and vehicle footprint?

I do remember a post on here about stretching wheel track and wheelbase within the same body size to play the regulations.

Don’t know when, or by whom, but you could be onto something.

I think that’s gorgeous, but it’ll be a cold day in hell when I pay that much for a Tacoma. Ditch the C-channel frame and drum brakes, and lose $10k and we have a deal.

I like Toyotas, and have owned a Celica GT-S, 3rd gen 4Runner, and now a 100 series Cruiser, but I don’t particularly like the pick up offerings. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nice and would be great if the Hilux didn’t exist. THAT is a proper smaller truck. Built to the same standards as a Land Cruiser, but with a bed. Known worldwide for dependability. Yet, we get a Tacoma that’s still rocking drum brakes and a c-channel frame. What the hell.

Damn, I actually had an idea like this a while ago. I think it would be cool if Toyota released a heritage or anniversary edition of their 4x4s with all the retro accents here and there. I always loved the 40th Anniversary 80 series Land Cruisers, it would be cool if they did something like that again.
