All of the difficulty. Let’s take a 6,000 pound pendulum, hang it from a 70,000 pound helicopter, then fly that helicopter as fast as we can while sticking a 20 foot long lance into a tiny basket that you better not miss or you’ll run out of fuel.

Turns out I know exactly what video that is from the thumbnail. When things go horribly wrong.

As I watched the video, I wondered just how serious is the need for that Humvee that they would spend all that money and make all that effort to fly it there. Or maybe this is just a training exercise to get practice refueling with that slung weight?

The real challenge would be refuelling that humvee

That video is as old as the Internet.

I’d bet on it being a training exercise. The last thing you want to do is try it for the first time when it counts!

Well, look at the bright side. If they do miss the basket and run out of gas, they could always jump in the Humvee and go get some more.

That’s probably why they were doing it over water. So they could dump the Humvee without risk of hurting anyone.

The video description did say it was a training exercise.

Reading comprehension FTW. I didn’t read it. Thanks.

It was in the YouTube description which you don’t see if you watch the embedded video. I didn’t think to point out in my commentary that it was a training flight.

Just watch that first step, it’s a doozy.

I am pretty sure that is a CH-53K, which is a fairly new aircraft. The inlets look likes the ones I worked on.

Psht. I’ll be impressed when they use it to refuel the Humvee.

I think that was on my old “Challenge of Flight” VHS tapes.

Flying as fast as possible would definitely not be on my list of priorities while running out of gas.
