Maybe Apple could spend a little less time over designing their hardware towards uselessness and removing ports

And a put a little more time into learning how to make cables that don’t fucking fray at the connector.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, you’ve replaced the F keys with an LED bar that doesn’t do anything, but adds $300 to the cost of your laptop? Fuck you , stop making shitty cables.

This will make my third charging cable in five years. And I’ve given up counting how many frigging iPhone cables I’ve had to replace, mostly because every time I have an iPhone or iPad under warranty, I go to the Apple store with whatever old frayed cable I have sitting around and tell them it came with whatever is still under warranty.

I’ve got a late 2008 MacBook that is still on its original charger. And I think only one of my Apple cables out of many has frayed like that. I bought some Anker cables to go with portable batteries. They are much more substantial than the Apple cables.

Does that include lightning cables? Because in my experience, the quality has dropped a lot over the years. I never had an old MagSafe or old iPhone charger fray, but like I said, this is my third MagSafe 2 that has frayed and countless lightning cables.

Why do that when people will just fork over more money to you instead of holding you accountable by not buying your shitty products anymore? Indeed they are likely use to being used by now, so we gotta make sure to dump the lightning port in a few years in favor of something else, break the whole ecosystem full of now obsolete lightning port products, and get even cheaper cables, bulkier adapters and crappier build quality that we will charge 30% more for next time.

And we’ll claim to have ‘changed everything. again.’ while we do it.

I’ve given up on Apple OEM cables. I use AmazonBasics mostly for lightning stuff. I havn’t had this problem with my MagSafe adapters, it seems like a common issue. The whole MagSafe thing is bullshit though in general, because they locked it down to drive up the price of replacement chargers. So in that regard, the move to USB-C is fantastic, because you don’t have to use Apple chargers/cables anymore. There are already magnetic break-away USB-C cables that you can buy if you like to keep that feature. I’m actually looking at getting a 13" Pro without the silly touch bar to replace my 5-year-old MBA. But it is getting to the point where I need to see something more than a touch bar to keep me buying Apple laptops past this year. (PS, the touch bar alone doesn’t add $300. The touch-bar models have faster processors, graphics, and memory than the version without it, so you’re paying for a lot more than just that.)

The fact that Apple sells a frigging $1500 Macbook “pro” with TWO stupid non-USB ports—and technically only one if you want to charge your laptop—makes me violently, violently angry.

ANd their dongles are insanely overpriced. Sacrificing performance and utility for thinness and battery life. There’s nothing “pro” about these machines.

Apple is the german luxury marquee of the computer world. Premium priced products that feel great to use everyday, but die quickly and are built like shit.

That’s why I don’t buy Apple OE parts for my Mac and my iPhones, the cheap aftermarket stuff will last for years while the OE parts will look dingy and start falling apart after 6 months.

The actual hardware isn’t bad and the OS is ok as long as you don’t try too much. It’s just cables and everything else that’s really shitty.

Eh, but the Touch Bar Pro uses the same 2.9GHz i5 that is a $90 option on the older Pro, which comes standard with a 2.7. That was just Apple’s choice to introduce a more expensive base model with crappier specs, so I’m not inclined to give them any credit for that.

I do agree as far as needing to more reason to keep buying Apple products. I’m debating getting a fully optioned older model 13" Pro while they’re still available, since my Mac is about to hit 5 years old and will get dropped from support. At this point though, my only reason for staying with Apple is that they haven’t yet gotten around to screwing up the bits in OSX that make my life and work easier, but I’m sure they will soon enough.

I’m still confused as to how Apple could patent the magsafe connector given that magnetic plugs have been used for decades for things like electric deep fryers (you really don’t want to accidentally pull one of a counter by the cord).

My MagSafe is as old as the laptop, so it’s entirely possible that quality has suffered in recent years. Yes, I’ve had only one lightning cable fail. But I’m also pretty easy on the cables.

Didn’t you hear? Apple doesn’t sacrifice battery life, it’s just that consumers don’t have the correct expectations for battery life. That’s why the latest OSX update fixed the poor battery life people were experiencing by  getting rid of the fucking “time remaining” information. “Oh, you’re disappointed that your $2000 laptop advertised with a 12 hour battery life is only getting 6 hours of battery life? Well, that’s your fault for looking at the time remaining, bitch.”

My only concern with that, which might not actually be grounded in reality, is that I swear every time I’ve used a non-Apple iPhone charger or any car charger, my battery’s capacity seems to drop off of a cliff.

You’re not crazy. Many aftermarket chargers don’t really have the proper amperage to charge iPhones properly (same with high end Androids too, sadly). So that when you disconnect, it wouldn’t be abnormal for the battery to start draining rapidly. A lot of times, how you charge your battery will determine its life and lifespan!

Third charging cable in 5 years? Sounds like you’ve identified the rationale behind their design.

Best thing I’ve done for charging cables is to buy a charger with a USB-C output. My phone and laptop both charge via USB-C, so one size fits all. When the cable gives out, it’s a $15 replacement cable.

This is actually an issue Apple has had for like, 20 years at least. I still remember my mom replacing three wired apple mice in the early 2000's before giving up and getting a logitech one from the local PC store. Due to my propensity of somehow ending up in a different work truck than the last one I was in with a dying phone, I’d managed to accumulate around a dozen of the old 30-pin cords which my boss insisted the office covered even though it was my personal phone and I was just an idiot, which was great after I left that job because then as they failed I just had another instantly to replace it. Then I finally had to replace my iphone 4, which lead to me not having a lightning chord when I need it.
