So in a bid to not waste away indoors, I rode my bike out to some castle ruins not far from home.

Kinja'd!!!

I cycled the five miles or so to Bramber castle along country paths as the weather was nice.

Well, if that isn’t the most precarious thing I’ve seen in a while.

I know right! It’s been there for nearly 950 years though so they must’ve known what they were doing. Looking down into the moat from the walls, my heart was pounding what being so high up with no safety precautions, and it was a little windy too.

Because I’m on the south coast of England there a tons of castles and forts, it’s where most threats of attack were aimed. Probably the nearest “complete” castle is Arundel about 15 miles away from me and close to Goodwood.

There’s 28 castles in a 30 mile radius of my house, not to mention a 19th century fort in my town.

It’s a lovely part of the world shaped by 2000 years of different civilisations fighting one another from the Romans to the Anglo Saxons and Normans to infighting throughout the middle ages and through Tudors and Stuarts, fighting the Spanish and French. Victorian fortresses to keep France at bay then additional defenses built to fend off the Nazis. There’s a river that runs through my town, Shoreham by Sea that has pillboxes littered along the banks in preparation for a Nazi amphibious assault. Don’t get me started in the town history.

ULGH!!! That’s what I love about the British Isles! So much history packed into such a smallish area. In the US, our recorded history only goes back a handful of centuries, and things are pretty spread out. I love visiting historical sites here, of course, but I want to stand within arm’s reach of a millennium of stories.

I spent a week once in the English Midlands and London and geeked out the whole time. I sat in a the yard of a Normal church and just looked at it. I lost it in London when the tour guide pointed out the temple of Mithras and what is believed to be the wall of Londinium. Amazing stuff. I’ll make it back someday.

You should, it’s great! When I went to the US I was amazed when I went to Kennedy Space Center, looking at the achievements of the US. It might not be as long or as bloody as British history but the US has done a lot in its relatively short history. I too want to go back to the US its probably gonna be next year but we will have to see how that president Trump thing goes.

Funnily enough Norman is normal for me, this Church  which is now the centrepiece of our town was built by one of William the Conqueror’s sons.

We also have an Anglo Saxon church from roughly 900 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Mary_de_Haura_Church%2C_Shoreham-by-Sea?wprov=sfla1

and another Norman/Saxon church https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Julian%27s_Church%2C_Kingston_Buci?wprov=sfla1

Fantastic! I found the one I got to explore. http://derbyshirechurches.org/church/alfreton-st-martin

There is a cemetery on site with some very old graves.

That is a very pretty church, it reminds me of one nearby, another neo gothic style chapel, Lancing College Chapel, which has vaulted ceilings up to 90ft high. It is huge.

Magnificent. It always amazes me that things like this were built hundreds of years ago with manual labor and a keen mind.

I should point out that Lancing College Chapel is only started construction only started 150 years ago and they finished in the late 70's
