New tire time - How bad are MTs on pavement?

Kinja'd!!!

It’s time for new tires on my truck, and I’ll admit to being a bit bro-curious regarding which ones to get.

I think the red letter General Grabbers would look great on my truck. I also do 99% of my driving on the road. How much more effective would my truck be at picking up babes with them? How much would the toll for vanity be on my sanity?

people who drive knobbys at highway speeds have a seat reserved in hell.

these dont seem to be very knobby however. I’d be concerned about wear (like other specialized tires, but I’m out of my element.

Loud and expensive. I’d go with some A/T tires.

All of the ones I’ve ridden in were super shuddery, loud, and made the abs and tc confused.

Whenever a truck passes me with tires like this I can hear their tire roar. I can’t imagine what it must sound like inside the truck...I’d save the money and buy something that makes sense for your driving.

They’re gonna wear out pretty fast on pavement.

I had MTs on my XJ. Useless with rain or ice, extremely noisy, will kill any hopes you had for fuel economy, almost scared away my future husband (although I was seeing a woman when I first bought the thing with ATs).

But really fun in their natural habitat, FWIW.

I’m looking at new tires for my truck, too, and one of my biggest motivators is noise. My truck has zero sound insulation, and I mean zero. So thinking of BFG All-Terrains... they have reasonable road manners / noise and still can sling some mud or sand if I ask them to.

Turn the suck nob up to 11 with these. There are so many good AT tires out there that are also good on pavement.

Quieter, more civil on the road, still good off it, and they look good doing it.

Very bad, loud, lack of grip, poor gas mileage, wear out quickly etc. My brother used to have M/T’s on one of his 4X4's and says he will never do it again. Even A/T’s can be hit and miss, he had some Goodyear ones on his Defender though and they were awesome, can’t remember which model but it was only last year.

Don’t do it. There’s plenty of good looking AT tires out there that don’t suck on pavement. I can personally recommend the Bridgestone Dueller AT REVO2.

Not as loud as any truck with an exhaust, and not nearly as high grip levels as a regular tire. I’d get a nice a/t instead if I had the money

That said, I daily a truck with cheap Taiwanese mud tires .(Nankang mudstars) It’s fine, just a little loud at 80mph, and not very good in the rain. They were half the cost of ko2s or duratracs. But I’m a kid, so my tolerance for loudness my be higher then yours.

I have quite a bit of experience with that tire and other than looks, for 90% of people they are garbage. They are made for dirt racing. So snow, mud, rocks and rain are a significant issue. Also, since they are made for dirt, they are very soft thus wear is a problem. There are guys that I know running them that have basically bald tires on a 1/2 ton at 20k miles. If you are looking for a good On/off road tire look at the BFG KO2 or the General Grabber AT2. Both are significantly better than the tire shown.

Get A/T’s.

You can get seriously aggressive A/T’s that will work drastically better on pavement.

A couple examples from Cooper:

Aggressive (we own a set on our lifted Commander they are EPIC tires):

http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Truck/DISCOVERER-A-T3.aspx

More aggressive:

http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Truck/DISCOVERER-S-T-MAXX.aspx

Both of these sets will perform better on road than a M/T.

I’ve got Cooper Discoverer AT/3s on our Envoy and they have a nice balance of good road manners, decent wear, and good non-pavement traction.

Really no reason to go full mt when there are so many good aggressive at tires out there. At 10/10ths in the mud you would notice a difference, but it doesn’t sound like that is your issue.

Ko2, Duratrac, cooper discovery, even the new grabbers are supposed to be great. All are going to behave on the road better than a mt.

Get Michelin A/T the only thing M/T does well on a road vehicle is look cool. I had BFG Mud Terrains on a durango, replaced them with michelins and it was like a completely different vehicle. Quieter, way more comfortable, smoother ride, etc etc etc,.

They aren’t that bad, handling is fine, Ride isn’t much different then A/Ts, they do wear faster and they do get a bit noisy on the highway but that’s more of a problem for people next to you in a convertible.

M/Ts on a mostly street truck are a dumb bro move. They kill your bad weather ability and are loud as hell on the highway. Any number of all-terrain tires will give way better on road handling, especially in wet & snow. They can still provide reasonably bro-y looks if that is a priority.

From most to least aggressive, roughly:

“Commercial traction” - Goodyear Duratrac, Cooper S/T

Off-roadier A/T - BFG KO2, General AT2

Half step more towards on-road - Hankook Dynapro AT-M, Cooper A/T3

Another half step more towards on-road - Firestone Destination A/T, Yokohama G015

Cooper A/TW is kinda like the A/T3 with added winter capability.

However, if you’re spending 99% of your time on road, a good highway truck tire like Michelin’s LTX M/S series or Firestone Destination LE2, would probably be your best option, if not necessarily providing suitable bro-ness.

They are very bad. MTs are loud and they like to wear unevenly in my experience. Just go for a K02 or similar. Or get the at red letters.

Just put a set of BFG A/TKO2s on my 2014 Tundra. Really pleased thus far, good road manners, not too much noise, maybe a little stiffer due to the perhaps a stiffer sidewall than stock. I will probably buy again.

Thanks for the tip - I think that would be perfect on my truck... I just have to convince myself that it’s worth the money when the existing tires are... fine? I guess? other than maybe being 35 years old.

Yeah I fought the same battle, 41 here. I upped the “do I really NEED to do this” inner debate by buying new wheels (couldn’t stand the stockers and have never ever changed from OEM wheels on any of my vehicles) along with the new tires, which were in really good shape despite having 40K on them. I finally made the justification work, at least in my head, by convincing myself that the limited times I go off road something with some tread would improve my chances of not getting stuck considerably. Getting stuck in the old 1995 4Runner is one thing, getting stuck in a full sized Tundra with only a come along is not my idea of fun.

Haha yeah that can get annoying but I figure if the driver can handle the NVH increases for long stretches then I can bear to listen to it momentarily as they pass by.

Harleys OTOH are obnoxious noise polluters. Tire noise and unmuffled exhaust noise exist in separate planes of shittiness

I’m with you except that my tires are 35 years old. I also happen to be 35, but that’s sort of beside the point, haha. I’ll see how things shape up when the truck goes back on the road. I’m having the tailgate fixed and a receiver hitch added. Then I gotta get the brakes working a little better - the master cylinder loses pressure over time. But 35 year old noisy tires are on my list, too.
