How is that even possible? I don’t see any visible damage to those plywood boards, but something has to give up, when house folds like that. Maybe they aren’t attached at all...

This is a perfect example of a lack of shear strength. Where is this? Do you mind if I show it to my classes?

My “I’m totally not an engineer but was raised by a guy that did construction and have built stuff of my own” guess is that there was insufficient triangulation on the lower floor to resist sideways load, and heavy winds blew sideways, which the bottom floor couldn’t hold up against.

In houses the plywood on the outside of the framing triangulates the vertical & horizontal studs, but with such big window openings front & rear and no interior walls the little bit of plywood didn’t create big enough triangulation to resist the side forces.

Shear strength and cross bracing not considered at all... with large openings in the front and back this might need to be framed in steel not wood.

Parallelograms are trendy these days, right? Maybe this is a new wave in mcmodern box townhouse design, perfect for edgy normcore aging millennial first time buyers (thanks mom and dad!).

It’s in Toronto at Leslie and Queen Street. Go ahead and use it! There should be some news articles about it at this point, too.

If no-one would have seen this mess, they could have easily fixed this. Just cover the left side building’s wall and the opposing new wall with a large amount of contact glue. Then inflate couple of inner tubes, rubber boats etc between the other gap.

That’s exactly what happened, a lack of shear strength. If you look at the plywood on the first floor to second floor transition, it’s pieced in with three strips. It’s straight up lazy carpentry. I that was all one piece it MIGHT have been able to keep standing, although my guess is there is a lot of other screw-ups in that structure as well.
